Here is a link to the ring that I found..

What metal would you recommend? My GF has mentioned to me that she thinks she would like YG, but she has given me the option of picking out something different it looks better. I really like this ring in WG and PT, but I have no idea if it would look good in YG. What are your thoughts?

By the way, I am getting a beautifuly oval diamond that will be set east&west in the ring. I made sure to get an oval that has a LW ratio of 1.32 because the rings I like are a bit on the thick side 3.2mm-3.5mm.

Thanks in advance!

If my wife says "I think I'd like(fill in the blank)", I think it is best to make every effort to get her just that to keep the peace! In those instances of subjective subtlety, I don't try to out-think or second-guess her.

Get her what she wants and you'll be a hero.

Your GF knows that she likes YG. A lot of the time, this is because of skin tone. I can wear either, but I prefer plat. I like the heaviness of it. It has a really solid feel that you know you''re wearing a ring.

Your GF knows that she likes YG. Yes, I''m repeating myself. This is the most important statement you made. If you are going to change metal color, I highly recommend going with her to a store so that she can try on white metal with her skin. She may love it. She may also hate it. If she hates it and you already bought it, that will not be good. HTH

The reason that she says she thinks she wants yellow gold is not out of preference, it is simply because the majority of her jewelry, albeit nothing that she is too attached to, is yellow gold. She is just worried that wearing WG or PT would clash with her other jewelry. If someone were to tell her that it is ok to wear different metals, she would be thrilled!

I think she likes both WG and PT more than YG, it''s just that she doesn''t have any WG or PT jewelry. Essentially this means that if I decide to get her WG or PT, I will then have to purchase her some other jewelry so that she doesn''t think that she is clashing.

Is it true that you are not supposed to wear a White Gold or Platinum E-ring if you are also wearing a YG necklace, or YG rings on your other hand?

My main concern is whether or not any of the rings that I have found will look good in YG. All of the rings I like are either filigree or some other intricate/antique look. I never see them in YG and that is probably because they don''t look so great!

Actually, you said she said she "thinks" she likes yellow gold. So what jewelry does she usually wear? Is it more silver or gold? The white metals are far more popular at this time. However, I do agree that some people look better with yellow and others with white.

No worries. I often mix metal colors. I have mostly YG for earrings and necklaces. I wear them all the time, and I have a white metal watch and e-ring. I really don''t care what anyone thinks about whether it''s proper or not. I wear it like i mean it.

I''m sorry I meant that she thinks she wants YG, but only because she is afraid of clashing. She normally doesn''t wear much jewelry. Maybe a gold necklace with a little charm type thing on it and occasionally she will wear a gold ring with a large topaz.

I was thinking that I would get her a nice necklace and earrings to go with the e-ring, that is if I decided to get a WG or PT ring!

On another note....could someone tell me why this is a great stone? I have been told by numerous vendors that they couldn''t find me a better oval stone than this one. I just want to know what it is about this stone that makes it great.

The GIA cert # is 15015237

The price I was quoted is $4,500.

Thanks again!

Mixing metals is a matter of taste and preference. There are no hard and fast rules against it. I mix my metals everyday--I purchase items in the metal that i think the item will look the best in, or just because I like it. Mixing metals will look great if done with some thought and consideration for esthetics.

If your girlfriend absolutely loves yellow gold, then you should get that. If she is on the fence and wears a mixture of jewelry metals, then get what you think will look best. Or ask her again, what metal she prefers. Mention that you can mix metals, and see if she decides she would like white gold or platinum better. I guess getting her what _she_ wants is the best way to please her.

Hey you! Which diamond did you get finally? Did you post pics of it and I missed it? I am totally looking forward to seeing what you picked!

Oh I see you posted the GIA cert number... don't know how to look that up. Oh well, someone will provide the information, I'm sure.

As for the setting. Hmm... It's not really to my taste. Honestly. But my taste isn't what matters. I know YOU prefer thicker bands... but um... does SHE? And this is a cathedral setting... does she like those? Honestly? I liked the other setting you had picked out better. This one isn't doing it for me at all. And there are princess cuts in there. I don't think that's going to look good with an east/ west oval at all-- especially with the cathedral style.

On metal. If you are SURE that's the reason why she wants YG-- then by all means-- buy her some other white metal jewelery and get the white metal ring.

I have a ton of YG-- REALLY Yellow (22K and up) gold I wear. Do I take off my WG ring? Heck no. It's fine.

ETA: How about one of these:

Hey Gypsy, nice to hear from you again! Those are beautiful rings that you posted. I too like the first ring that I picked out, but it seems like everyone else told me that wasn''t the ideal ring for an east west oval. I was told by Mark at ERD that he didn''t think that ring was ideal because it was too much metal, he thought it would look better in a ring that had less metal and maybe some diamonds on the band.

As for the thickness, it''s not that I want a thick ring, I just want something that is unique and has a pretty design/engraving on the interior of the band. The main thing that my GF wants is a ring that is unique, and although a band with lots of diamonds is unique, I think she meant something that it totally different. Too many people have bands that have lots of diamonds.

Honestly, I prefer the ring that I posted originally because that''s the type of uniqueness that she wants. I just don''t want something that will reflect badly on the diamond (thats what Mark told me would happen). Here is a link to the first ring...

http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/classic-solitaire-settings.asp?module=setting&cid=57&item=15

The specs on the diamond that Mark found are as follows....

It is a 1.18ct. G SI1. It has an extremely small bowtie. The SI1 is under the table but is very eye clean. The ratio is 1.32. The cost of the diamond is $4,650.00.

Other things...Oval Brilliant, 8.05 x 6.10 x 3.57,...VG polish and VG symm, faint flor, depth 61.5 and table 63

Let me know what you think and whether or not this would look good on that ring. I spoke with James Schultz and he said he couldn''t find me a better stone than the one Mark got for me. The only problem is that I would like to get the ring and stone in the same place and unfortunately I can''t find the right ring at ERD. The rings I like are at James Allen.

Here are a couple that I found on ERD...let me know if you like these better.

I apologize for burdeoning you with all of this, I just don''t have anyone else to talk to about what ring I should purchase for her!

If none of these work, just tell me what I should avoid when looking for a ring. I feel bad having you search the net for me!

Oh BABY! I LOVE that oval! WOW!

DO NOT.

IN ANY WAY.

LOSE THAT OVAL!

Now... settings.

Okay... here''s a bit of advice to you, from someone who has worked with Mark (although still haven''t completed purchase)-- he does make custom settings and his prices are EXTREMELY (and I mean EXTREMELY) good. I''d go custom if it were me.

AND please... do a POLL On this if you want to... but consider one of these two settings for her ring. They are VERY unique with an east west oval and would show that puppy off well... AND Mark could make them for you VERY reasonably.

cluster%20jewelry%20oval.JPG

pave%20oval%20374.jpg

Especially this one. Pave band, four prongs for the oval. I''d go half or 3/4 eternity.

What do you mean by reasonably? I just envision a custom made ring being quite expensive? If my budget was $1,500 for a ring, is that even close to what you think it might be?

I absolutely love both of those settings, but all the ones like that seem to be more in the $2,500-$3,000 range.

I''d call Mark... show him the pics of those two settings and ask him for a qoute on which ever is easiest/ nicest in his opinion. It doesn''t hurt to ask. And by reasonable I mean-- you could very well be surprised by the price he qoutes you. Remember you are buying the stone from him-- he''s likely to make you a nice package deal if you ask.

Ask. LOL. He''s a VERY nice guy who REALLY wants to make his customers happy. James Allen''s settings aren''t going anywhere... so what''s the risk?

Do you have any other pictures of the second ring you posted? That one is gorgeous! I would like to take a closer look at if I can.

Back to the metal issue...I had almost all YG jewelry for years. But when white metals became popular a few years ago, I realized that they look so much better on me. So I got a silver watch and either wear silver hoops or diamond studs set in wg. I wear a silver or wg pendant. That''s really all I wear on a daily basis other than my yg rings which I am trying to replace with platinum. So it''s not like she''d need a lot of new things. Just remember to give her a new piece of wg jewelry for some anniversary gifts, and then she can choose to wear whatever she wants!

No I don't have a better pic of it... it's from a larger pic of other rings...

The band would be pave like this Michael B band:

The red box photo is the one I cropped it from.

ETA: To save on labor which is where the $$ come in on custom work. I would only go half way down the shank on the pave or 3/4 way. At 2mm it would be stunning.

Thanks so much for the help! I do have some bad news though, which means more help might be needed.

I did some talking with the GF and I think she does want YG, she just thinks it is more traditional and that''s how she has always pictured her E-ring (glad I asked!).

Anyways, she also gave me a couple of ideas of rings she liked...

I really like the rings you posted Gypsy, but for some reason I don''t think the ring will look as good in YG. Do you have any ideas for rings that are similar to the ones I posted? Her main criteria are that the ring not be too "Goddy", it must be unique and detailed!

I looked all over last night and these are the only two rings that I could find, although I don''t think the second one comes in YG and it is also too wide (3.8mm).

Thanks in advance!

Au contraire, I believe the halo designs look wonderful in yellow gold as well. Look at this ring from Ritani and see what you think:

It would look good with white diamonds around the main stone instead of the canaries.

Here's one that's more artistic, with a wave in the band, but it gives you an idea about 18k yellow gold:

I also think a tiffany-style setting looks stunning in yellow gold.
