which is better - 4 prong or 6 prong setting for Solitaire?

Im leaning more towards 6 prong setting but just wanted your thoughts and views?

It all depends on personal preference. Some like 4 prong because it shows off the diamond more. While others like 6 prong because it''s more secure for your diamond. Also, 6 prong will make your diamond look more round and a 4 prong may or may not make your diamond more squarish. It all depends on the ring itself. If you''re really active with your hands, you may want to go with a 6 prong. If not, and you like to see more of your diamond, then you''re good to go with a 4 prong. All depends on you and your preference. Good luck!

I had four, now I have six. I love the fact that six make the diamond look truly round, but I recognize that four let you see more of said diamond. I also think the "squaring" effect is much more pronounced in smaller stones (like my 0.6ctw pair).

total preference, But I love the look of six prongs to make a round diamond look more round, but I''ve had double four prongs which kind of made my diamond looked like a cushion shape from far away- love that look too. so its really how you feel, I bought some fakey rings with different prongs to help me decide.

6 prongs add visual impact size wise in my opinion.

I have had both. My diamond was originally in a 6 prong and I had it changed to a 4 prong.

I had a six prong on my original e-ring and a 4 prong on my second. I like the look of the 4 prong better but feel a little more secure with the six prong. I somehow managed to chip my stone in
the six prong anyway-so now I am going for a halo! It really is just about preference-and insurance if it helps you be less worried about it. It does me.

I just changed my setting from 6 prong to 4 prong. I like the looked and security of 6 prong but 4 prong makes the diamond shine so much more. I can see more of my diamond and just love it so much!

I used to be very partial to four prong settings, but for some reason after seeing so many solitaires on here, i have made the switch to really liking the six prong.

Now someone above mentioned a double four prong - i think that would be fantastic!

I much prefer 6-prongs, both for the appearance and security. Most 4-prong settings I looked at made the stone look more like a princess or cushion, whereas my preference is for round.

There is no such thing as better, just different. I like 6 prongs. Like others have mentioned, it makes the stone appear rounder. There was a photo of one ring (on another site) that was a round .5 diamond in a 4 prong setting. To me, it looked liked a princess cut. I''m sure it was how the photo was taken. Still, I was shocked at how square the diamond looked. I don''t like that.

P.S. the Royal Crown that the poster above me posted is stunning. Unfortunately, my bf did not like it in the two-tone setting. And I insisted on yellow gold. Oh well, it''s stunning in WG/PLAT

I love 6-prongs, but I have noticed (and granted, I am a spazz!) that a LOT of 6-prong heads can be just a wee bit *off* from perfectly straight and symmetric. And personally, any crookedness or wonkiness (however slight) makes me half crazy, so for that reason, I went with 4 prongs!

I prefer the 6 prong too! I have a 4 but have had 6 so I would try them on and see what you like best!

This is hard. I LOVE the way 6 prong looks if it is done WELL. It can''t be too overbearing, cover too much of the stone, or be crooked. I have to agree with Lynn B that the chance of the head being ever-so-slightly askew is smaller with fewer prongs! (I know this from experience). So I had a stone reset from 6 prongs to four prongs and I like it better ONLY because it appears straighter and not as...intrusive, I guess? But still, I see six prong solitaires on here that are gorgeous and I sometimes wonder if, originally with the six prong, I either a) picked the wrong setting, or b) picked the wrong jeweler.

Like all others said, it's a matter of personal preference. Mine is a four-prong, and I like the look of it. I've nothing against six-pronged rings, but when I look at them, to me they look more like a hexagon or starburst (not the candy) than round, which is funny considering so many ladies have said they prefer six-prong because it makes the stone look more round. Guess I'm a weirdo

I prefer 4-prongs. I have seen some gorgeous 6-prong settings, but typically like the look of a 4-prong setting. Many 6-prong settings look a bit busy, but again, it depends...I think each setting has to be judged as an individual setting and not clumping them all together. It really comes down to execution of the craftsmanship.

I think it''s a personal preference, as many have said, and also I personally believe the six prong to be a tad more secure and safer for the stone in regards to chips and things. Even though in either setting chips may occur if hit at the wrong angle. Also, depending on the size of the stone and the type of prongs, the four prong can make the stone look more square as some others have also suggested. I think they are both lovely and depends on the overall setting.

I had a 4 prong and changed it to a 6 prong, when I upgraded. Same reason as most: it made the diamond look rounder and bigger!! Now I've reset it into a halo with 4 double prongs and I think it will stay that way

I think it depends on the size of the diamond and how careful you are with it. As you can see in DF picture, the 4 prong can get banged to heck. THe 6 prong is a little safer... but it''s really up to what you prefer.

I prefer 6 prong.

I love 6-prong solitaires!! I find the round shape is nicely emphasized and the extra protection is a bonus!
