Which e-ring setting for my petite AVC?

As an aside, since I'd gotten a quote from Singlestone, I figured why not send a request to BGD too. XD Sent one in this morning and heard back this afternoon. With BGD it would be a couple hundred more than 1500 once you add in setting fee and shipping/insurance; this would include .04ct BGD Signature H&A Melee F/G VS (though I'd probably request H/I to match the AVC so that might kick it down a bit?). It's a bit more than we'd like to spend, but at the same time I feel like that's not too bad? BGD has a good rep around here and I've admired their work for a long time.

Though I asked if they'd done custom jobs in antique styles before and she sent me a couple pics:

This one...seems mushy. There's no definition to the details. And the prongs are so bulky!

This one's quite lovely, except for the prongs. >.o

If you are going custom to create your ring you can request the prongs you want. I'm sure they wouldn't put big prongs on a diamond your size. That's the great part of custom design. You get to decide exactly how you would like the ring to look :))

Love this place, you guys are a font of knowledge! <3

Niel and Yssie, Didn't have the chance yesterday to go further into this, but what exactly are the design elements I would be looking at for this ring? There won't be any engraving, and there are only 4 accent diamonds.

I know that he hasnt done rings exactly the same the elements from this rings give me faith that he could do what youre looking for.

I love that wedding band! Is that by David Klass?

yeah those are all examples of his work. i feel like that sort of bead set or pave with metal ribbons on the side are in his wheelhouse. all the ones with those simple elements seem to look beautiful

Those are lovely Niel!! He really does seem to have an eye for the dainty/elegant style of antiques. He's been great to work with so far too, good clear communication, timely responses (usually hear from him via email once or twice a day).

I agree that DK has done a lot more antique style rings (from what I have seen) than BG. BG has some beautiful settings for sure (Truth and many others), but they are not who I would go to for an antique style setting. I am happy to hear you are having good communication, too! That is a bonus!

I'm making myself crazy with second-guessing LOL. Stumbled on this set the other day and can't get it out of mind! (I know nothing about the vendor in this listing so I'd probably stick with DK if I do change my mind) https://www.etsy.com/listing/167064579/christie-14kt-rose-gold-morganite-and

I've been wearing a cheapie rose gold stacking band this week and that is not helping haha! I do think rose and yellow gold look better with my skin tone than white metals. And I've been noticing that my vintage wedding band has some chipped diamonds, and the bottom of the shank is wearing thin...so really it wouldn't be so out of the question to get a new one to match the halo setting, right??

Poked around a bit in the forums and came across a link to this AVC in a halo in rose gold....and boy that is sure not helping either. http://www.pinterest.com/pin/91620173639464621/

Would a halo (custom made in proportion to our AVC) completely swallow a petite stone?

my only concern about a halo on a stone that size is that it can swallow up your center stone. I think it would give off the impression you were trying to make it more than it was, rather than making it the best of what it is

I FULLY support the idea of yellow gold or rose gold. I love yellow gold because its a bit more timeless, and its absolutely having a comeback. But rose gold is great too

I like this because its has those white metal overlays where its white metal around the stones, but a different color gold in the shank, which i think is very flattering.

and it would look good with a marquise and round ring later. though im a fan of the ring youre rocking in the original pic

That's exactly what I was afraid of. :/ That set in rose gold just caught my eye as so delicate and lacy, and you get just a hint of the warm metal color with the melee, but I don't think the effect would be quite the same without the halo. And I can't quite visualize a stone of this size with a halo. In fact I don't think I've seen anything under .5ct with a halo.

Love the vintage ring you linked! It's in lovely shape too. How does the white gold work with a mixed-color setting like that? Do you leave the white gold un-rhodiumed?

I am *such* a commitment-phobe with big purchases, it really makes me crazy lol. I suspect that aspect of my personality is at work here. Currently waiting on designs from DK for the original setting, here's hoping a few more nights sleeping on it and then seeing his drawings will snap me out of this!

i believe those vintage rings used to do platinum. But if they did white gold you would just do 14k. it would stay white, just not as "sliver" white as rhodium plating.

I like the two tone, i like the all rose gold, i like all yellow....i just love gold in all its lovely colors.

And dont get anxious about your purchase, just take your time, make sure you get it right. I think youll know when you see the cads if its right for you.

I can't wait to see what you end up with,I think your diamond is wonderful, it looks great on your finger. Personally I would have went with the vender of the settings you picked out. But I'm excited to see what DK has in the works for you.

Oh boy, now that is interesting! I do think the rose gold is very sweet. You could still do the original plan in rose gold, of course.

AND I have a setting that I think is so pretty and shows how you can have a halo if you want it! I saw this ring this summer. It had a tiny pink diamond in the center probably smaller than the AVC. Because it was pink, it had a rose gold milgrain area around it and then an outer halo. I think you could do something like this, too, and DK would still be fine. You could then choose rose gold or white gold for your wedding band.

Thank you for this, I needed this reminder! Our anniversary isn't until July, but I have been a bit hung up on wanting this on my finger NOW. ;) I'm also a bridesmaid in March for a friend who was my bridesmaid, and I confess I'd been hoping to have my new ring in time for her wedding, but that's not as important as taking my time and getting it right.

I think what's thrown me off is that I am a *planner* (and commitment-phobe) with big purchases. The plan for the past year or two had been to get an avc in the .6-.8 range and set it in Vatche 1516. Then stuff happened and we halved our budget and the plan went poof. I am not complaining, we are very fortunate to be able to treat me to any bling at all after all the expenses that have cropped up (heck we are very fortunate to be able to afford IVF/adoption, and the special veterinary needs of our kitty, at all). And I think deciding to go custom and bumping the setting budget over 1k has made me feel like, with the extra money being put into the setting, it has to be a ring I will be happy with for another 5 years and it's not going to be easily upgradeable/replaceable for me (when I think in the back of my mind I have been hoping/planning to upgrade to our originally-planned size in a couple years). If that makes sense?? So then my commitment-phobia kicks in and makes me start second-guessing and over-analyzing everything.

Luvsdmb, Thank you that is so sweet! <3 I will keep you guys posted (probably more than you might want LOL).

DS That is such an elegant ring! Can I ask what size the ring is?

I think if we stick with the original plan, we would do still do it in white gold to keep it authentic-looking. If I decide I must have rose gold :twirl: then we would probably go with a different style.

Must say that of all the AVCs I've seen on this forum, I like the ones set in rose/yellow gold best (except for BEG's french-cut setting, oh my word). Mine is an H so it could go with any color metal I think, but I can't help but thinking that rose or yellow would make it look the best. I think I would go with 18kt rose, not too pink and not too yellow.

I did some poking around and found some inspiration for small stones in halos :o

This is a .48 OMC, size 6 finger

This is a .35 round, size 4.5 finger

And I poked around halo-inspiration-vendor's shop, and she has some 4.5mm stones in halos

Definitely need to sleep on the halo thing for a few nights though. I have never wanted a halo before this in all my lurking here. I think it would be pretty, but I'm don't know if it would be "me," if that makes sense! We're a couple hours from any decent jewelry shops, but I think we might drive down and see if I can try on some halos to see if they jive with me in real life.

Also to consider is that my hubby still prefers the original setting over the halo. He will be fine with and agree to whatever I want, but I really do want him to be a bit involved and like what I'm getting, since it's a sentimental piece and celebrating 5 years of marriage.

I have been reading through your thread regularly and I am looking forward to see what you are getting. Take all the time you need to make any decisions. There are many lovely possibilities.
I love the idea of Rose gold by the way!

The plan for the past year or two had been to get an avc in the .6-.8 range and set it in Vatche 1516.

If this was the original dream and you are undecided on a setting would it be an idea to trade in your AVC and add it with the setting money to buy a larger stone. There are some lovely AVRs in the $2000ish range, which could then be set in a yellow or rose gold basic solitaire.

Hi, OP! :wavey:
Any update? Did you decide what to do with your AVC?
