Wow. I thought 4 would be the winner hands down. For me it's a no brainer- 4.

DF, now they have the MEGAmillion game too.
Bigger jackpots, if you win, PS party at your house ... okay?

Yes!!!! If you hit it big in mid August when I''m in town that would be swell!!!

I used to prefer six for security purposes, but when I reset my diamond, I changed it from six to four prongs.
Now, I have both the Royal Crown (6 prongs) and a Ritani (4 prongs), that I alternate between.

hi Kam!
I am doing okay. I am 31 weeks now and I feel I can''t get any bigger!
Yes, I changed my username/avatar because I didn''t want to use my daughter''s name anymore and my butterfly pendant is my most favorite piece of jewelry that I own.
Thanks for asking about me! I hope you are doing great as well.

Kayla must be getting excited about being a big sister. Do you know what gender you''re expecting?

If you have a princess diamond, you really don''t have a choice between four or six prongs, do you?

I dropped my e-ring in the sink twice last night trying to get off the super glue, and the jeweler found it to be loose today. I could hear it rattle when I moved my hand beside my ear. He said that it wasn''t at risk of coming out yet, though.

It''s a Roberto Coin pendant that I got in November last year. I got it for an awesome price on Ebay, less than one third the current retail price!
I absolutely love it! It''s probably the best purchase I have ever made. There is currently one on sale on Ebay, but it is more than double what I paid.

I recently took a course primarilly directed at assessing insurance losses and evaluating damage to jewelry.

"There is also a "movement" of opinion with insurance companies I learned in this course to not cover 4 prong settings, as a far higher amount of stone loss claims eminates from 4 prong settings vs. 6 prong settings. I dont remember the exact statistics, but it''s approximate stated ratio is about 6 out of 8 losses are due to even a single broken prong."

I always thought that in a four prong loosening of two prongs could cause a loss, but I''ve seen photographic evidence that with even one broken prong a diamond can escape it''s mounting.

I know appearance-wise consumers prefer the look of the four prong setting. But if you do choose that, make sure you check for prong wear, as if they are gold prongs, and thin, chances are far greater that they''ll be susceptible to loosening up.

There were quite a few very interesting photos of mounting after a claim was made. I will ask permission to post them here.
Actually, I was really amazed at the amount of diamonds lost from the settings due to alloy deterioration (due to exposure to caustic chemicals) and utterly poor workmanship eithther in the original manufacture of the item, or in repairing of it.

I willl second RocDoc's information on diamond losses and the Insurance Industry possibly changing how it does business. Yesturday while researching informationn on stolen dimaonds on the net I ran accross a recent (March 2005 ?) article that indicated that aproximately 3/4 of all diamond losses to consumers were from the failure of a 4 prong (or less) setting. Theft, fire, or other major damage to either the settings or the stone only accounted for about 1/4 of the losses (but I did not get a breakdown of that 1/4).

The insurance industry has taken note of this and is discussing the options. I suspect that sometime in the future you will either find that 4 prong (or less) settings will either not be covered at all for diamonds above a certain size - or will have a huge premium for the policy.

Rockdoc & Perry,

Thanks for your informative posts on this matter.

Don't need "photographic evidence" here since I am living proof that diamonds
CAN fall out of 4 prong mountings when there is a failure of just one prong.
As I posted earlier, I did NOT enjoy sitting through 3 hours of orchestra rehearsal
with a 2.05 D-VS2 diamond in my pants pocket. I was extremely lucky that I
noticed it's escape and found it on the floor. It was not wear and tear,
but rather an "accident" that caused my diamond to fall out of its mounting.

It is 6 prongs for me and my friends since that incident.

But as I also posted earlier, they need to weigh the aesthetics and risks of
BOTH to make an INFORMED decision on what works best for them.
