Which dinner plates do you feel more sorry for?

When I take a plate I take one from the top of the stack.
After washing I put them back on the top.
The plates at the bottom rarely get used.

I sometimes wonder . . .
Do you feel more sorry for the plates on the bottom of the stack because they don't get used ... or the ones on the top of the stack because they get used the most?

I also wonder if anyone out there is neurotic enough to rotate their plates.
Then I wonder if that's not neurotic, but rather sensible and commonly done.

It's a little neurotic, but -

I put the plates I like the most at the bottom so I don't risk breaking them as often.

I put the plate I hate (yes, I do have one) in the middle so I don't see it.

I put plates I'm fine with but not in love with on top.

I usually only think of my plates when I am sawing away at a steak (I'm not much of a cook).

Then I feel bad for them. They make that sad squealing noise . . . ::)

I had hubby put a piece of molding (he called it a "quarter-round") on the shelves about 2 inches from the back of the cabinets. Then, I stand my plates up and lean them back against the cabinets. I can't figure out to 'splain it, but it's kinda like the picture.

Then they all get a nice view of the kitchen through the glass cabinet doors. :praise:

I never thought of the guys on the bottom of the stacks though. . . ugh, now I have plate guilt . . .

I always put the clean plates at the bottom so that they all get used equally.

I really wish I was joking...

Paper plates works wonders....they all get used eventually.

I have no problem admitting I'm that neurotic.

I have Fiesta Ware, and rotate the colors on a seasonal basis. Darker colors are for fall and winter, lighter and brighter colors are for spring and summer. I want all my Fiesta Ware to feel loved. :naughty:

What?

We just keep using dishes till they're all gone, or till the dishwasher is full... They all get used pretty evenly....

I also have Fiesta Ware, and I do the same thing -- except with my colors that are retired. While I don't particularly care for the apricot color, it's starting to be worth something!

yep what she said lol

The soup plate I use as background for jewelry pictures. That plate has taken quite a beating, has been forgotten outside in the rain, had stuff glued to it so I could take photos and everything you can imagine.

I don't necessarily "feel sorry" for any of the plates.
However, I only keep around 6 large and 6 small plates in our cabinet. Its enough for DH and I to run the dishwasher every 4-5 days so all the dishes pretty much end up getting used regularly.

Glasses on the other hand...we have way way way too many, and 90% don't get used.

Who attributes feelings to objects? :loopy:

If there was any chance that the dishes I have could wear over time with constant use, I would regularly switch out the plates. But not because they might be feeling dissed.

I feel the most sorry for the ones that land on the floor (or the feet that they land on), since I'm very clumsy. That's why I own corelle though, they are nearly impossible to break. They all get used very regularly, I have service for 12, and we have weekly family dinners at my house, and we routinely have 8-9 over at a time, so with using a couple to serve, they all get used.

I have thought about this. My solution is to swap them around every few months so they wear evenly. I don't feel sorry for any of them, just sorry for me and my pocketbook when I break one. :((

Well, I haven't purchased any new set of dishes in a long time...I did buy a few replacement dinner plates and feel guilty using them b/c I don't want them to end up looking like the ones we already have...so I slip them to the bottom of the stack and they're neglected. No, I don't feel guilty. They're the lucky ones out of the bunch ;)

Oh, and what SUCKS is I bought the cutest pumpkin shaped plates at Target. Only two...one for each kid. After YEARS the first finally broke after it was dropped. They were suppose to be Halloween plates, but we used them year round and they never chipped even after tons of abuse. In retrospect, we'd have had an entire collection of pumpkin shaped plates b/c they could be passed down the generations since they surely would have outlived all else.

Kenny~ are you drunk?

I rotate my plates, when i unload the dishwasher the clean one's go on the bottom.....that way none collect dust. If I suddenly need to use all of them (visiting family?), I know they all will be spotless.

I also have to put my glasses with the tops (opening) down. I'm obsessed that dust might get into my dishes and then my mouth. I dust EVERY DAY.

Dust is DEAD SKIN CELLS

lol, If there is dust, yes. I worry that even if I cant see dust, there might be some there.
I also worry about the microscopic germs that spread around the bathroom when people flush toilets.....
It's the germs/dirt I can't see that scare me the most.

No, but that sounds like a darn good idea.

Kenny, seriously? Are you bored? lol

Which testicle do you feel more sorry for... the one that gets to hang lower or the one that gets to be closer to your body? Hmm....

@CARHABERA: I think it's tongue-in-cheek, that's what makes it funny . . . :D

I'd like to nominate these as new kid plates: :wavey: http://www.uncommongoods.com/product/mr-food-face-plate

I wish I could pull the photos off and post them, but they're stuck.

Did somebody say Fiesta?! I LOVE FIESTA! :appl:

I have 6 different colors that I use all at once, in a colorful rainbow mashup. Love it!

Did you see the new marigold tureen? http://www.fiestafactorydirect.com/ Love it, especially the handles, but holy cow, it's expensive!

But I am a dishes/bowls addict! I also have:
a large collection of classic blue and white
a couple of sets from my great-great-grandmother
some fine Italian glass dishes
some French Quimper
some Japanese contemporary
some hand made stoneware
a huge collection of blue and white cups and saucers
some Torquay pottery
some Alsace pottery
oh, I could go on . . .

I DO feel sorry for the bottom plates! When I put the clean ones back on top of the stack I apologize mentally to the poor guys below, "You folks never get out for a breath of air." Amazing what a shared addiction to gems will bring out.....

I'm not compassionate (or smart) enough to rotate them, so the ones with gold rims get all faded in the dishwasher; the bottom ones stay young & fresh as teenagers!

We tend to use paper plates b/c then I can put them in compost. Our nice plates only come out for company.

This thread reminds me of why I feel so at home here on PS.

I think the grossest thing is a hand dryer in a public restroom. There have been many articles written about them. How can someone hold their hands under a machine that sucks the bacteria from a public bathroom and blows them back out, only warmed?

What a thoroughly PS-ey topic ::)

I too rotate our dishes, because I really don't like the asymmetry of having a few dishes that are new and sparkly and a few that are "well-loved", and since I do like using the nice stuff keeping them *all* shiny is not an option! I confess that it also bothers me that we use certain items in our set more than others - the gravy bowl, for instance, has been used exactly twice and looks it, and I've run it through the dishwasher a few times since to fade the plating a bit so it better matches. Our sterling is ancient so it's all nice and matchingly scuffed up, no acrobatics necessary there!

PT - from one germophobe to another - warning heeded

Aww! Awesome idea. I have fiestaware black and would really love to do this. However can't get DH on board!
