Which diamond should I pick for a solitaire pendant?

Hi! I''m new to this forum and since I can''t decide on my own, I hope you guys can help me in making the decision. I''ve been looking for a 0.4-0.5ct diamond to make into a solitaire pendant and I have found these two:

- 0.4ct, G color, VVS2, Ideal cut, Ex/Ex, thin to medium girdle
- 0.47ct, I color, VS1, Ideal cut, Ex/Ex, med to slightly thick girdle

My questions are, since it is a small solitaire, is the clarity and color more important or the size? I don''t know if I may resell the stone or make it into a ring in the future, so which would be a better choice? My SO thinks having a smaller stone but better quality is better, since it will sparkle more and has better resale value.

What are your opinions? Thank you in advance for any advice/opinions.

Hi Kaylie

It is cut quality which will give you a sparkly stone of any size, so very important to concentrate on that. Diamonds are not good financial investments so don't purchase with the idea of making money or even getting back close to what you paid. It is usual to recoup only around 30 - 50% of what you paid if you try to sell or trade.

As to the diamonds you listed, more info is needed please.

depth %
table%
crown and pavilion angles
polish and symmetry grades ( I assume this relates to ex ex above?)
diameter measurement
girdle thickness
fluorescence if applicable
star percent
lower girdle facet percent

For a pendant also you can sometimes find shallower proportioned diamonds can work very well. Also unless you really prefer VVS clarity then you can lower to VS or even SI clarity without visual sacrifice, especially as the diamond is intended for a pendant, but this is a personal choice.

Hi,

As stated, we need more info about the cut. That aside, I would not pick a VVS2 or VS1 for a pendant of that size. It''s unnessary to have that excellent of clarity. My pendant is an E VS2 and my earrings are F S1s and they look identical. I cannot find the inclusions in either of my earrings (they are ACA stones from whiteflash).

As long as you find a great cut stone, going with an SI1 is the best way to make the most of your budget.

There isn''t really any resale value. After I bought my F SI studs, I tried selling my smaller ones for half the price I paid, and didn''t get any offers! I''ll eventually reset them into another style! If you are curious about resale value, you can always do a search on eBay or CL and see what similar pendants are reselling for.

I didn't mean reselling for profit, what I meant is I thought it will retain its value better than a lower stat diamond. But in that case, I will probably not sell it in the future if resale value is only 30%. What about resetting it into a ring in the future? Is the size okay for resetting into a ring?

In that case, I did another search, here are more info:
0.47ct, I color, Ideal cut, VS1, depth 62.4%, table 54%, symmetry excellent, polish excellent, medium to slightly thick girdle, no fluorescence.

0.48ct, I color, Ideal cut, VS2, depth 61.5%, table 55%, symmetry excellent, polish excellent, medium to slightly thick girdle, no fluorescence.

0.5ct, I color, Ideal cut, SI1, depth 61.3%, table 60%, symmetry excellent, polish excellent, medium to slightly thick faceted girdle, no flourescence.

For a pendant, I''d stick with an ideal cut, eye-clean SI clarity, I-J color (which will face up white in a well-cut stone), and within those constraints get the biggest stone I could afford. Clarity doesn''t seem to matter much for pendants because most people won''t be looking at it up close. In the same way, there''s more leeway with color, particularly since nobody will be seeing the stone from the sides as you might in a ring setting.

I have a beautiful 0.5 J/SI1 bezel-set pendant from Whiteflash and couldn''t be happier with it!

Yes absolutely you could set it into a ring at a later date.

It should be on the report image. Is there a report for the stones?
 
The angles are usually located on a diagram of the diamond on the grading lab report. BN usually has the report uploaded for you to see. Just copy them down!
