Which diamond should I choose?

Hi everyone

I'm new to the diamond world and could really use some help. I have recently ordered and paid for my engagement ring. I have since been told that their head office have decided to swap my diamond for a better diamond which will fit the setting better. Could you please tell me which is the better diamond, and which is probably more valuable? Thank you!

I am not going to address which diamond is best, but rather ask, who is this head office and why are they changing things without your permission?

You bought and paid for X and they are unilaterally giving you Y?

They may be doing you a favor, or a disservice. Still, to my way of thinking they owe you a choice and a, "May we suggest this? We believe it would be to your advantage." You then have the choice of saying yes or no or even asking for your money back if they then tell you what you want is not possible. I am completely uncomfortable with, "Our home office decided." It would have me running like a startled rabbit should anyone ever do that to me.

Thanks for your response Wink, I appreciate it! I was very alarmed myself when I realised they had swapped it. Head office is where they source the diamonds, they supposedly had a couple of diamonds in the same categories, and had diamond X and diamond Y in front of them and decided diamond Y was the better one for my ring. I have been assured the swap was in my best interest but because I don't know much about diamonds, I can't be sure. I have been told I can go with diamond X if I wish to, the decision is now up to me. Could you and others please give me an idea of which diamond you would choose if it was your ring? That would be really helpful! That would give me some insight as to whether they really did have my best interests in mind.

I am surprised to hear of any vendor having a policy which would allow this. My suspicion is that the diamond certainly does fit the setting better, but you have no way to tell, by the grading report, which is a better performing diamond.

If the selection process, by you, was, "please recommend a diamond for my ring and set it" with no ability to see the stone in person and no pictures, Idealscope, ASET, I can see why they may feel justified in selecting a 'better' stone for you. Ultimately, however, the customer MUST have the final say in the purchase - what information or images did you have on the original diamond beyond the grading report?

The two diamonds are similar and at this size - it is unlikely you can really tell a difference. Plus, I don't have the facet structure and photo of the diamond so I can't really tell. However, if I had to pick - I would say the first one which is less deep and faces up bigger. However, both have pretty big tables ... I would like to stay in the mid-50s.

Cant really tell without photos/asets of each. The faceting pattern could make all the difference whether one has good light return
and one doesn't.

One is larger than the other (I'm talking length/width). What kind of setting is it? Is it a prong setting, bezel, tension, halo??? Wonder
why such a small difference in size is making them change the stone?

Can you ask the vendor to elaborate on the reasons why they believe the second diamond will suit/fit the setting better and what qualities differentiate the two diamonds to the eye?

Maybe let us know what they reply with...

Can they send you any pictures/videos/asets etc. before they set the diamond?
