SooooI plan on proposing to my girlfriend later this year and i've been messing around with "design your own ring" option some sites have. I'm young, on a budget, and don't know much about diamonds. I narrowed it down to these diamonds.

Both rings with diamond and settings come out to $700 because the settings are slightly different.

I also have some questions. Her ring size is 4, so would .28ct princess cut with a classic setting look okay, or too small?

and my other question.. is it even worth going with a color D,E,F and clarity VS2-VVS1 .28ct diamond or should i just go with a bigger diamond with lower color/clarity?

Personally I would go with a G or H color and a VS1 maybe VS2 clarity. It will allow a larger stone AND you are not going to be able to tell a difference in clarity without a loupe, or in color without being next to a DEF stone.

What is your total budget including setting? ALSO--are you sure she wants a Princess Cut? Youll get overall larger face-up size with a round.

I agree with everything Ame said. Definitely go to G VS2 or so, and does she specifically want a princess cut? James Allen provides pictures of stones and sometimes has lower prices than BN, so check them out, too!

Thanks for the replies!

I know she'd rather have the princess cut over round because whenever she is browsing rings she always mentions how much she loves the "square" ones.

I've decided i'll go with a bigger stone and have come to these choices, i'm not really sure the difference other than the more expensive one is a G color instead of H, and the symmetry is Excellent instead of Very Good. It also has a 'report'.

I'm thinking about the first one right now which would put the ring at $1,230.00 - $849.00 for diamond and $389.00 for 18k setting.

I have never heard of that vendor, and I would strongly recommend your using one that has reviews here so that you know you can trust who you are buying from. You do not want an EGL graded diamond, because the color is probably 2-4 grades lower than they state. Stick with GIA.

This stone is $570 for pricescope members who pay by wire (which your bank can do).

The downside is that James Allen's plain settings start at close to $500. You could get a setting locally, or maybe contact ID Jewelry who probably can do better on the setting price and maybe the diamond, too.

I just saw your last post, so if you can go to $1000 or so, here is a setting that can work for a princess cut:
