Where would you buy a solitaire

I've been looking around the Internet at solitaires - plain and micro pave ones. I'm trying to decide what I really want. Because of my fairly active lifestyle, I'm leaning towards a plain platinum solitaire. I'm also thinking about an antique cushion or OMC - maybe in a lower color (I like the warmer, chunkier, old fashioned diamonds). So, here's where I need help. Where would you go for a solitaire setting? I think the Leon Mege Princessa is gorgeous and I've seen a couple of lovely Victor Canera solitaires. What about a setting from Jewels by Erica Grace? Or is something from ERD just as good for a lot less money? We aren't working with unlimited funds (wouldn't THAT be something) but I want something classic and well made.

Thanks for whatever advice you can give me.

I'd go for from Mark Morell. http://www.mwmjewelry.com I'm considering a solitaire now for an engagement, and he's one of the only jewelry makers I feel is worth it. Very reasonably priced for the make quality and finished look.
The only other solitaire settings I very much like are from Ann McKay (and I'm probably going to go with her for the uniqueness), but her style isn't for everyone. http://www.annmckaystudio.com/diamonds.html She was an apprentice of James Meyer, whose work is on permanent collection at the Smithsonian. Unfortunately, he no longer accepts outside stones :/ Ann McKay does bezels, so it's completely suited for an active lifestyle. In fact, daily wear is part of her philosophy in designing jewelry.

Do you want an actual antique or have you looked at good old golds Austin vintage stones?

I love the quality of ERD and they are very well priced. I think for a solitaire without pave you do t have to go hand forged.

I've seen some really nice looking antique diamonds at JbEG but I'll check out GOG too.

You could check out Old World Diamonds too. From what I understand, there are also stones available not listed on the website, so when you get closer to purchasing you could contact them to see what they have in your budget. My ring is from JbEG and I'm very happy with it!

eta: just re-read your post and saw you were asking more about settings, sorry...but you need a diamond as well! :cheeky:

I've seen some diamonds on JbEG that I love. That will be my first choice for sure.

If I were going to get an OEC in a traditional-ish style solitaire, it would be either this:

or this:

http://www.engagementringsdirect.co...red-solitaire-engagement-ring-bpid-70-14.html

In the interest of full disclosure, I considered both of those for my August Vintage round and might do a reset down the road in one of them. I think the flower motif would be really pretty with the faceting of the OEC. But that's just me. :D

For limited funds, I'm very happy with my Tiffany style 6 prong Stuller.

If I could allocate more to a setting, I would go Vatche - sleek, molten liquidy metal... (they're a lot sexier than the words I'm using to describe them! :naughty: )

In light of the fact that you describe yourself as having an acctive lifestyle, I would steer clear of diamonds with stones set all the way around the band. Diamonds are the hardest substance known, but they can also be brittle. I have seen so many rings with chipped and missing diamonds along the palm side of the ring due to gripping luggage, tennis raquets, you name it! Think about your lifestyle and activities. Maybe a solitaire with a halo is the way to go. That way, you can still get the mico-pave look that is so big right now.

I would get a Mark Morrell.
