Hi, I''ve been lurking on this forum for awhile, and all I can say is I am SOOO glad I found it before purchasing my engagement ring! I have found so much helpful information.

I have a question that I haven''t seen on the forum, though. If I purchase a loose diamond from WF or GOG, where should I buy the setting and get the stone set? From a "maul" store? If I go to a jewler in the L.A. Jewely district, will they be offended if I only buy the setting and not the center stone from them?

Topping this. Can anyone help me?

Hello! :)

Well, if you buy a diamond from WF or GOG, you might also like to choose your setting from either of them too. Both companies have a lovely range of settings, covering all budgets - so I would have a look through their styles and designs first of all!

If you buy your diamond and setting from the same place, WF or GOG (whichever you use) will be able to set your diamond for you as well - so that really simplifies things for you!

I can''t comment specifically on the LA jewellery district, as I''m in England. However, I can''t see any reason why you shouldn''t do this if you can''t find a setting you like with an onlone vendor.

Don''t be surprised if they try pretty hard to get you to buy one of their diamonds though!! It''s not unheard of for B&Ms to diss stones bought online - although I would hope you don''t encounter anything like that!

Thanks, Cleo, I have been looking through the settings at both WF and GOG. I do have several that I like, but I''m not sure how to make a decision, since I can''t try them on to see which one I like best on my finger.

I understand wanting to try rings on your finger first.... I think some rings are beautiful until they get on my finger....
you have a few choices though.... you can either try rings on at a local store to determine what looks good and what you like overall in regards to shapes, sizes, mountings, etc.... or you can just take the diamond in anyway. I would make sure it''s a reputable jeweler still though since they will still have your diamond in order to set it..... I know a GREAT jeweler on the central coast that I totally trust and am waiting for my upgrade to be returned to me.... I still use them even though I live in AZ now.

All the local companies I have talked to would have been happy to set my stone. They would have been happier if I had bought the diamond from them, but they aren''t going to lose out on the sale of a setting by complaining I didn''t get their diamond too.

In the end, I am getting my setting online so I will have my stone from one online dealer and my setting from another. Had I picked the setting out before my stone dealer could have just sent my stone to the setting people and that would have been that. As it is now, I am simply going to send my diamond to the company I am getting the setting from and they will take care of the rest. Easy easy lemon squeezy!

One more thing:

If you buy your stone before you have a setting picked out, have the diamond dealer set the stone in a cheapo setting. Insurance companies will not insure a loose stone, and no one will cover a stone they didn''t sell if it gets chipped (seriously unlikly) while being set.

The couple of dollars it would cost to have the stone in a temp setting is totally worth it

I will tell you this. If you are in Pittsburgh, PA, do NOT to get it set at Helfer Jewelers.
