$3000 is a super budget! You can get her a gorgous, well-cut diamond that will blow her away! I agree with everyone else, get something you can afford now. Upgrade later.

I think that you are making a sound decision to not overextend yourself into loan territory for something like a luxury ring...I''m sure we didn''t mean to bombard you but many people have been here a while or been married a while or whatever and do have great experiences and advice to offer....

Also I''m sure you already know this but the engagement is not about the ring but rather a promise to marry you, so don''t get TOO carried away with having to have the expensive ring, I know most guys want things to be perfect, but there is something to be said for starting off small as befits your status (if you are still trying to get back on your feet from previous bad practices etc) and then letting a future upgrade speak as a testament to your accomplishments, together...good luck!!
