We got married about 5 years ago. At the time I wanted to give my wife a bigger diamond than we could afford. After a lot of research on diamonds, in this forum and others, we decided that we would purchase the nice platinum Vatche solitaire setting of her choice, and set it with a convincing diamond substitute.

Today, the CZ is worn out, and we can afford to replace it with a diamond. I''d like to buy a loose diamond online, and have the vendor replace the cz in our ring with the real thing. If they could also polish up the ring, and size it up slightly (my wife thinks her knuckles are bigger since having babies), then that would be nice too.

I''m inclined to use Whiteflash, which seems highly regarded here and has great selection, but it happens that we now live in west Texas, and WF is in Houston TX, so we would be subject to 8.25% sales tax, which would amount to an extra $600 or so depending on what the rock ends up costing. I noticed on this board that WF appears to offer Pricescope members a 10% discount -- is that correct? In that case, I suppose the sales tax business would be a wash... Unless other highly regarded vendors offer a PS discount?

The placeholder stone in the setting is either 7 or 7.5mm, and we would want a similarly sized round diamond, probably 1.3 to 1.5 carats, say G to J color, GIA or AGS certified. I want an ideal cut, preferably H&A. We wouldn''t mind some distinguishing features, e.g. inclusions visible at 10x (but "eye clean") or blue fluorescence (but not at all cloudy or muddy).

Ideas? Recommendations?

THANKS!!!

I don''t know why I thought it was a 10% discount for PS''ers with WF. I now see that it''s 2-5%.

Here is a list of diamond vendors check them out. What is your search criteria? many here would love to help you out and *buy* vicariously through you

sorry I see some of your criteria mentioned. is there a budget in mind also?

What a fun project. I personally would arrange a visit with WF and pick out that beauty myself but that''s just me. I am sure you can find a lovely diamond online as well.

I would like to keep it under $8000. If I can do better than that, then that's great too. I'm looking for a better understanding of where the "sweet spot" is on the bang for the buck curve.

I would go for ideal cut, near colorless SI diamond that is eye clean. If you like warmer colors or aren''t sensitive to color you could look at J/K diamonds as well.

That''s a big difference. You need to find out exactly what diameter range will fit in the setting before you start looking.

How do I do that?

It''s a platinum Vatche Royal Crown setting, if that helps. I can probably obtain a reasonably accurate diameter on the cz, to the nearest 0.1 mm, say. (I just need the right tool for the job.) Is that close enough?

Does anyone know what diameter range this setting will tolerate?

Vatche makes the Royal Crown to fit many sizes. I am guessing that the CZ you have is in the 1.25 - 1.50 carat range from your description.

Any jeweler should be able to measure your existing stone for you.

I dropped $30 on a cheap, made in China, digital caliper at Lowe''s. I''m a geek; I''ll find other ways to amuse myself with it. In 5 years I''ll buy the genuine article from Starrett or Mitutuyo ;-)

The placeholder measures 7.5mm.

(BTW, if I recall correctly, I bought it from Wink. Thank you sir, it has served its purpose well.)

Given 7.5mm, what diameter diamonds should I be looking at?

Ummm 7.5 mm diamond? probably a 1.5 ct ideal cut... just a guess tho :)

Good luck!

Well now I''m worried. A 1.5 ct diamond is roughly 7.5 mm in diameter, just like the placeholder. And 1.5 carats puts me at the high range of my budget... A step down to a 7.2 mm rock, say 1.4 carats, gets me a nicer or cheaper diamond, depending on which way I want to go, but will it cause problems for the jeweler setting the diamond?
