Where to buy a morganite ring?

Hi,

I'm helping out a friend who wants to buy his girlfriend a morganite engagement ring. We are in a small town, none of the local jewellers deal with morganite, they almost scoff at anyone requesting it. Can anyone recommend a reputable online store to find a morganite ring? Also, any education to be offered on how to choose a morganite stone? Probably in the 1-1.5 carat equivalent size, a cushion stone. Thanks!

Post in the colored stones subforum - you will get more help there!

But in brief, your friend should be aware that morganite is not a very hard stone, so it will need to be babied. Sapphire comes in a similar color, and is a more durable choice. The experts on the colored stone forum can point you towards some good stones if your friend has a sense of what color his girlfriend wants (pinker vs more brown, how saturated, etc).

Morganite can fade in the sunlight, which is another reason why it's not often found in engagement rings.

There's a lot of conflicting info on what does or does not make a morganite fade, but the GIA says heat treated ones do not fade. Apparently the heat treating "pre-fades" it and you can rely on the color being permanent.
