Can anyone direct me towards a source for genuine antique engagement rings? Not replicas. Also , what should I be aware of when shopping for old rings , and what does "filigre" mean?

Singlestone has a very large selection of real antiques (which many are not shown on their website).

"Filigree" is delicate, lacelike ornamental openwork:

Singlestone, all the way! Ari is wonderful to work with and did a phenomenal job on my set, though mine is a repro (I would assume he has genuine antiques also, though).

Also check out Israel Rose (I think it''s newyorkestatejewelry.com), estatediamondjewelry.com and Doyle & Doyle. I have not purchased from any of them, but they have some terrific looking pieces online.

The online recommendations are good ones. I would also suggest checking local antique/estate jewelers in your area. Many of them do not have websites yet but have wonderful treasures inside. You can also have the ring checked out by and indepentant appraiser (someone not affiliated with the store) for verification.

Do you live in the LA area? Antiquarius on Beverly Boulevard just west of Robertson Blvd is full of genuine antique jewelry dealers (engagment rings included). There are also a few in the diamond district in Downtown.

Langs Antiques in San Francisco... many of their items are listed on their site if you google for it.

I also second Singlestone!

Give a call and ask for Ari. He will be more than happy to let you know how much each one costs.

Ari mentioned that they will have a new site by the end of the year, so right now it''s a bit limited. Call or email him - he''s very helpful and will send you pics and pricing.

If you ever are in the east, Peter Suchy Jewelers in Stamford, CT has nice antiques. Also, 47th Street in NYC has estate jewelry vendors, if you go armed with some research on pricing. There can be sharks there but also some truly unique items, unlikely to be found anywhere else.

Why dont you tell us what city you live in/near so we can give you suggestions within driving distance. As for SingleStone, you really have to go there and see the selection. If you''re in LA. I shopped there but also in estate jewelry shops in my area. I''d suggest that as well wherever you live.

I know ebay can be a scary place (especially for diamonds), but there are a ton of reputable antique sellers on ebay...I have purchase antique jewelry on ebay (diamonds) and have always been very happy.

I wanted to add another Single Stone mention - Ari is wonderful.

My stone came from them.

Antiquarius is also fabulous!! (If you''re near LA.)

Has anyone mentioned www.nelsonrarities.com ?

I highly recommend them. They''re reputable, terribly knowledgeable, and only carry merchandise that THEY love. Their website is something of a bother...I''d call them and talk to them directly. I''m sure they have more antique diamond rings than shown on their site.\
