Hello,
My bf and I have been ering shopping for a few months now. Thanks to PS, we learned about a vendor whose settings we like. However, this vendor basically focuses on settings so the center stone would have to come from someone else. He (setting vendor) has mentioned a couple of places we might want to check out, but we aren''t there yet in the process. Plus, we might want to go with someone else for the diamond. Nevertheless, the idea of working with two different vendors in different parts of the country has me worried. My fear is something happening to the stone during the setting process (chipping, scratches, cracks etc) and then my bf and I are out several thousands of dollars and without any recourse.

Can someone tell me about their experience getting a stone and setting from different vendors? Would we need to get insurance for the loose stone and, then, another plan for the ring once it is completed??? How does this work? This is all new to me.

Thank you,

Hi Anita :),
Quite a few people buy settings or get settings custom made from people other then the people they buy their diamonds. I have not done it yet but I will most likely be doing this in the future :).

Essentially as long as your stone is insured you should be fine :) accidents can happen with anyone but as far as I know they are not that common, but I would still insure you don''t want to be the uncommon one. If something does happen you have the insurance to cover it. Just make sure you are using a reputable vendor to set the diamond as well.

jewelers mutual offers a policy that will insure your stone while it's being set but i believe you have to keep a policy with them for a certain amount of time after, but this solves the problem for a lot of folks. there is only one PS vendor i know of that will insure the stone while it's being set in one of their settings even if you don't buy the stone from them. I really would suggest trying to buy the stone and setting at the same place if at all possible. although you vendor specializes in settings, i'm sure they could get in diamonds that would meet your requirements right? then you wouldn't have to worry about seperate insurance and they would take responsibilty for the stone right?

ETA: you can also have the vendor you are buying the stone from set it into an inexpensive setting and get the ring insured that way. then if anything happend while it was being reset into the permanant setting it would be covered.

Thank you for the feedback and reassurance. I will do some research on Jewelers Mutual (I see there happens to be a current thread on Jewelers Mutual right now--how convenient for me!) too. Price Scope is such a wonderful resource! You know, in talking to other vendors over the last couple of months, I was told there were no policies for loose stones. Hmmphh!

I will have to ask the setting vendor if the stone would be covered if I go with one of the diamond sellers he suggested. While it makes sense that this would be the case, he didn''t mention it when we talked previously so I am not going to assume anything (we all know what happens when one assumes
