Old thread bumped up by a potential spammer but I'll answer since @Daisys and Diamonds chimed in...I am not a gambler. I am trying to remember how much money I gambled with when we went to Atlantic City with my graduate school friends back in the 80s. That was a long time ago so I really don't remember. I am betting (haha betting) it was less than $100. I was in graduate school after all lol.

Since then, (my one and only time in Atlantic City) the most I ever gambled was on a $1 mega millions ticket. Which I rarely buy. I keep forgetting I have to be in it to win it.

About 140 GBP on a lottery syndicate that was guaranteed to win big money - I won in the region of about 8 GBP!

The sale pitch was very good, something along the line that the number of tickets purchased in different combinations could not fail to win big, blah, blah, blah...

Never again!

Its the start of the long weekend here - labour day Monday and i was about to go to bed - it was 11.23
when a house two along from us cranked their (non Bruce) music up
its in stereo because the house on the otherside behind us is doing it also
Ive had to ring noise control because it doesn't matter what bedroom we sleep in we can't sleep

Anyway back to the thread at hand
I didn't notice how old it was

I’m not a gambler, so maybe $35-40 first time I went to Vegas? Seemed like something you have to do when you visit Vegas, haha. Other than that, I play cards every year with friends or family over Diwali, since it’s a tradition, but we play seriously low stakes (like $0.10 a move), so the most I’ve ever lost is probably like... 10 bucks? I’m pretty decent tbh (or they all suck) so usually I end up winning a little.

It's a time honoured tradition of my dad and I to go to the casino for a couple hours when he visits lol. I usually bring back about half my money because I don't like losing it and want to spend the leftovers on something useful lol. We each get 20 to 40 to spend and once it is gone it's gone and we leave. But I admit hitting the little lever is really fun.

I’m sorry. My dad who is a very wise individual told me a long time ago that life isn’t worth living without (some) risk. Don’t beat yourself up. You took a chance and that’s what life consists of...you win some and you lose some and ultimately you’ll find the “right” person with which to share your life. I know it.❤️

It’s all good! I thought I married my soul mate... turns out I married him so he could help create my soulmate. My daughter is beautiful & I wouldn’t change anything because I have her

Yasss. And that’s the corollary. Sometimes our so called missteps aren’t missteps at all. Meant to be. And in this case no truer words could be spoken. You have your amazing daughter. She’s everything ❤️

Yes! I’m the poorest I’ve ever been financially & I doubt I’ll ever recover.... but I’m rich in other ways.

Years ago I lost $60 in a slot machine at the Luxor in Las Vegas.
I felt sick to my stomach and swore off gambling forever.

Lesson learnt the hard way.... I miss the man I married... but not the man I divorced

I can relate to that. I'm so very sorry. Hugs to you dear friend. The financial devastation of my divorce was way harder than the emotional. Focus on healing yourself. Deep down there's no way he can look himself in the mirror and feel good taking money from you. That's what I tell myself. He can live with that torture.
Hang in there and take it one day at a time and you will rebuild and your finances will recover. You can do this .

I dislike gambling. I do NOT like losing my hard earned money. My ex husband loved to gamble and my current husband loves to gamble. I handle it better with my current husband. I used to enjoy the glitz and the lights with my bling but now I can't even sit at the gambling table because it stresses me out too much. I usually wander into a Tiffany or Cartier or get a drink somewhere while hubby plays. I can handle him gambling a certain amount of his money but not mine  Thanks to Covid there are no conversations about going to a casino

Early in our relationship my wife and I would go out for a night and go to the casino or races, we would lose up to maybe $300. We won a lot as well though, the best winnings in one day was around $5k.

I haven't gambled in over 8 years though. Unless you count the gamble that is cutting Opal :saint:

Thank you.
I believe he wouldn’t think he has done anything wrong.... he is a true narcissist and full of his own self importance.
He threatened that he was going to make me homeless, penniless & childless. He managed 2/3, but I’m still the main caregiver to our child and that won’t change.
Sadly I believe he would still sleep like a baby each and every night - where as I struggle to sleep more than a few hours at a time.

$20 on one arm bandits anytime I’m in Vegas. i think I’m up to $80.
We also usually place a couple bets on college football and college basketball. Not over $20-$25 and we get some of that back usually. I guess I will never hit it big since I don’t bet big. Not a fan of gambling with my hard earned cash.:roll2:

Never played in a casino ever.
Not once.

I've only purchased ONE lottery card because one of my palms was itchy and I spent $2 & I ended up winning $10.

If you include tickets bought for a charity raffle, then I've probably spent a grand total of $10 over the years. Other than that, no gambling, so no losses.

This off topic, but kind of related, but I thought it would be interesting to share. My Chinese name contains a character that sounds like the word "lose" in Chinese, so whenever I gamble I tend to lose. My husband on the other hand, has a character in his Korean name that is pronounced "won", and he always wins at the craps table. In fact, since we have been together, he has always won enough on every Vegas trip we have taken to cover the cost of the trip, with some $$$ to spare for gifts.

A lady never tells, but let’s just say that some spend the same amount for an evening out—nice dinner, concert, theater, amusement park—it’s all entertainment.

I'm not a gambler but have spent more than my fair share of time in casinos because of my parents. When they first got hooked on casinos, it made me sick how much money was getting thrown away (despite being within their means) - but as time went on, I've gain new perspective --and appreciate their existence.

As they struggled with various health issues over the past two decade, the casinos offered a getaway where they could enjoy independence and escapism in a place where everything they needed was in one place (restaurants, hotels, etc..). During my dad's last few years, weak and suffering from dementia, a day trip to a local casino would be the only highlight of his week.

Anyway to answer the question...I've personally lost no more than $200 on a multi-day trip. I try to limit my losses to $40-$50/day but have lost as much as $100/day...killing time while with my parents. That being said, I do get the benefit of free hotel, food, shows, shopping with points etc. because of my their spend.

I went to Atlantic City once, I stayed in the Casino until I spent my $50 :D I've spent more here and there on lotto tickets but never that much at once. It is not a regular event for me at all.

I once lost someone I thought was a friend. I'd never been to a casino and he wanted to impress me, I guess, and act like Daddy Warbucks. We went to a casino in Oregon, I think it was. He went boldly to an ATM and pulled out a bunch of $20s. He strutted meaningfully over to a machine, saying "This has always been my lucky machine!"

He started putting in $20s, one at a time, pretty quickly. I'd never been to a casino, nor used a slot machine, and he was pushing buttons and pulling levers so fast, it never occurred to me that this was gambling - there just seemed to be SO little to get out of it.

After about...2 minutes, maybe?...his $20s were gone and I was still waiting for him 'to start gambling'. He turned to me and said - "This was your fault! This has always been a lucky machine for me, but you bring a bad energy because you're so disapproving!"

I was absolutely gobsmacked. I'd never even SEEN gambling before and thought this was still part of the 'getting my chips' process. I had no idea he'd even started.

So I said - "Well, I might go sit in the cafe area. Take your time - just come get me when you're done." I sat there reading a book for 2 hours till he came to collect me, SUPER grumpy. Apparently my 'bad attitude' had pervaded every machine he used. We got back in his car, went home, and when my visit was over and I left his house a few days later, I never saw him again. Putz.

ETA I'm also married to an actuary. Every time I even THINK of buying a lottery ticket or something similar, he quotes the *exact* odds of winning vs losing. That tamps down the enthusiasm pretty promptly. I don't think I've ever actually gone through with placing a bet or buying a lottery ticket after I've been on the receiving end of the "this is the statistical likelihood of you losing every penny you're spending" talk. :eek-2:
