Hi everyone,

I have a 4mm height asscher I'm cathedral setting and would like to know what the minimum clearance should be provided between the bottom of the diamond and the bottom of the head/crown?

I'm in the middle of a custom design project now and am looking to reduce the head height of the modeled ring below. The measurement from the table to bottom of head was 6.5mm, so that leaves 2.5mm of clearance for the bottom of the diamond. That seems like a lot of clearance and something like 1mm or greater would be fine clearance.

Love to hear anyone's opinion. Vendors chiming in would be fantastic! Thanks :D

Mechanically the minimum is zero. Actually, it's less than that because you can have the culet of the stone sticking out the back and into the finger. Not that I recommend this, but it's possible and customers DO do it. That's part of the beauty of custom design. You get to make what YOU like. What you're asking is 100% an artistic question. What would look the best? That's a question between you and the designer. Personally, I think the proportions in the illustration look pretty good.
