What is one thing you would change about your/fiance''s ring?
I figured this question would really help those of us who are going through the process. Also, what perhaps is the best part of the ring you chose (to end on a positive note)?
My husband did not consult me at all when he was searching for my ring. Amazingly enough, he got me almost exactly what I would have chosen. The only thing I would change about my princess cut 3 stone ring is the width of the band. Knowing I like weighty rings, he got me a 4mm wide shank. I would have gone a little bit thinner to enhance the size of the stones.
I love this thread already. Though I am searching for an engagement ring now I have had one before which is making this time around all that more trying-I want it to be perfect. Last time it was a two tone ring with I clarity stones. This time I want Platinum (white gold was a pain to maintain) and I want G-VS stones. I don't even know what the color was on the old stone.
Edited to add: I've been considering square bottom shank too.
Good question. My answer, nothing. I love everything about my ring & my diamond. I should, I picked them out.
My fiance, doubting his ability to buy me what I wanted, let me do the choosing. Of course, he had input from the get go & if he didnt like a certain ring, then I would pass on it. In the end, he loved both my choices (diamond & ring) & approved them wholeheartedly. The fact that I spent his money wisely made him feel good too. haha
Wow, if I could just wave a magic wand over my hand? I would want a slightly "fatter" pear. Mine is 1:1.67 L/W ratio, but my ideal would be 1:1.60. Okay, maybe I'm splitting hairs. My husband (of 17 years) rolls his eyes . . . .
Finding everything I wanted in a diamond (nice cut and proportions, good clarity, icey white color -- oh, and it had to be 2 ct) and stay within our budget was very difficult. But life is all about compromise, right? And the best part of my ring? Selecting my diamond (upgrade) myself.
The first (and so far only) diamond I've ever bought was for my GF's e-ring. I was thinking about it yesterday, if I came across a huge amount of money, would I get her a different ring (I haven't proposed yet)? But since I've begun shopping for it so long ago, I've become so attached it and once I've given it to her, it'll mean a lot to us being the first and all, and I don't know...to change it...maybe I'll get a matching stone and a significantly larger center stone for a 3 stone e-ring.
While I 'm glad we focused on cut of the stone, I would have gone higher in carat weight & less on color & clarity (F - VS or VVS to H VS2). For some reason I thought they all went hand in hand (the four c's equaling one another). Which brings up an interesting point. I see many here going for F/SI stones. More power to them; but, way back when you were advised to stick w/ like specs i.e. F/VVS/VS1, I/SI. One was led to believe that the better color/clarity stones were shown better consideration went cut. Any old timers want to weigh in on this?
I'm glad we have the perfect little stone now; but, I also have the best of both worlds now.
The ring I have is perfect. A 2 1/2 carat center pear stone with two 1/2 carat side pear stones. Love the shape of all the pears. Sparkles like the dickens with a clarity of VVS2 color E set in platinum. So no complaints there.
If I were to change anything I would make the center stone a fancy pink pear diamond. Not too light and not to dark and still packed with fire and brilliance.
Hi Beansy - If you're a guy buying for your partner, I'd say a really important thing to check out is, is she a step cut or a brilliant type of gal?
It's odd but after researching and reading people's opinions it seems that people usually are one or the other. Personally I am definitely a step cut person, I don't actually like massive sparkle.
So I'm delighted that my fiance let me choose - the only thing he insisted on was a better quality, larger sized centre stone, what a sweetheart!
Girls-best-friend,
Have you posted pictures of your pear? I love a great pear. I'm in the market for a setting and would like to see a picture of yours with the side pears.
Thanks,
Diamondlil
Not much, just a bigger diamond but .69 RB was all he could afford at the time. I wouldn't go higher than a 1ct though because then I'd never wear it. Mine is white gold with side baguettes. I love it! The ring is very thin which makes the diamond look bigger - my friend has a 1.5ct with a very wide band and it doesn't make her diamond look anywhere near as nice as mine - she actually said mine looked bigger. Fat chance, but you get the point.
One more thing - I would make sure he picked out a diamond wedding band that fit snugly next to it at the time - even if it was just the setting with no diamonds to finish making it later. Now we're stuck paying the price for a custom setting for a diamond wedding band to fit next to it.
The one thing I would change would be a bigger diamond! Like somebody once said there is "shrinkage" once its been on your finger for a while. Could only afford a 1.4 round since he had just started working overseas and I was still a student. I saved every penny I earned and paid for half of it. So I told my husband, that its only fair he buys me a 2 carat for our 10th Anniversary. 4 more years to go....
Our original e-ring was just a piece of platinum that our jeweler made into a circle. Looking back I can't believe they had the audacity to charge us $300 bucks for it. For our 1 year anniversary, I picked out the Peter Storm solitaire, still . Must've looked a good 7 or 8 months before I found the setting. It just has simple "x" on both sides and the crown is what makes the ring unique.
I will post a picture once I get my new/old ring back. Can't wait! (See reasonable to ask for replacement setting on RockyTalky if interested in my ring problems).
