Hi All,
I am a newbee to this forum so please bear with me. I have a Beautifull GIA certified 3.04 Round Brilliant Diamond that I am looking for a fair market value of. The stone is Internally Flawless (IF) Clarity with a color of "M".
Although the color advises the stone slightly yellow, the stone is hardly yellow at all! I was told that GIA is very tough on grading and that another diamond grader may give it a better color grade. Is this possible?
I know from experience with grading coins that sending a coin to three different graders will get you three different grades on the coin!
Is[$$)] this the way it is with diamonds too!
Anyway, I am looking to sell this stone but I need to know what it''s worth.
Any help is greatly appreciated,
Thanks
Harold

take the stone to an independent appraiser, you can click on the links up above (resources) and find one in your area. independent means that they do not work for a jewelry store but rather work for you, their client, so you don''t have to worry about any partiality on the results.

ask them for a realistic appraisal on fair market value, not inflated appraisal for insurance. that will give you a good idea of a realistic value.

keep in mind that re-selling a stone is not as easy as you may think on your own, you may want to see if a local store will take it on consignment or a jeweler may be willing to buy it from you if they feel they can re-sell it easily. but making a private sale, esp on a large stone, may be harder than you think. you may have to take 50% of the value if not less, depending on your venue.

good luck!!

Hello Harold,
In my opinion, you can take the GIA appraisal to the bank. To my knowledge, the arm of GIA that grades diamonds, the GTL (Gem Trade Lab) has a system in place whereby 2 different graders have to come to the same conclusion. If they cannot agree, a third person is brought in to make the final determination. All their stones are graded with master diamond stone sets and albeit, some M''s are better than others, I''m sure it fell as darker than an L, but not as yellow/top light brown as an N color.
In terms of what it''s worth? It''s worth what somebody is willing to pay for it, and some offers will be stronger than others, so shop it around. Someone is probably willing to pay a premium for it, because they may have a buyer waiting in the wings and don''t want to loose out on the opportunity. The size and GIA cert is a plus. Varius markets look for certain types of material. The Asian market has routinely enjoyed clean stones (higher clarities) and lower colors (L,M,N etc.) Be patient and do your homework. You will find a solid buyer. You might want to investigate auction houses. Wish you well in your sale. Steve Marino
