I thought about this poll. Don't get me wrong - it's been fun to see the results. BUT, this is a hypothetical question.
I have all my rings out of the box to photograph. I viewed them side by side. While I appreciate each for it's own beauty, the bigger one just stands out with little to no perceivable difference in quality.
I quess my point is "what would one choose if faced with *all* these diamonds set in a ring side by side (given the static that they are all cut the same - though probably not real world). I'd love to see the results of that.
I posed this question on one of the famous Tiffany threads. Placed side by side w/ the same specs - would one choose the much larger non-tif stone or the much smaller blue box one.
Or maybe I'm just killing time while my clothes are drying.
Well... since this is a hypothetical question, I am with the minority in choosing the D-IF diamond. Given that I'll never own a D-IF quality diamond, it was my choice if I had that kind of money to spend on a luxury item.
F&I--I think that the Tiffany/non-Tiff poll I put up actually could be answered similarly to the question you posed--the odds are so overwhelmingly for the non-Tiffany branded stones and 'build your own' mentality with a few people as the exception to the rule. So if you adapted the question to a similar one such as yours--probably we'd see very similar results. But interesting---maybe I will pose that question this week in another 'ridiculous poll'.
I like your ridiculous polls! Though I fear they may just be novelty to you - so please continue on even if *you* get tired of posting them. We can always come up w/ a new one.
I guess my question is "In a poll where you don't have your little hands hot on one of the stones - that you *will* go home with - would one really pick the one in real life that they choose on the poll?"
Where I am coming from - I never thought of going bigger w/ less qual. of color/clarity until I got my mitts on one. The difference was huge in size & very little in real perceiveable difference in quality.
But then, is this just the way I am?
At the end of the day, although I love to look at polls, would one *really* choose that when confronted w/ the choice in front of them?
I think Magna is funny about the reason for the D/IF choice. Very sane reason for the choice - an outside the box answer.
I picked the G VVS2, although I cannot imagine myself wearing a diamond that large. It was a toss-up between that and the D IF. Reason - I really like less colour in a diamond.
I saw an H next to a D in the store that begins with T and ends with Y and has 7 letters a few weeks ago, and the difference was discernible to my eyes. I think clarity is something that people place a great deal of emphasis on when looking to buy, but colour is something you notice more, from day-to-day...(not talking about heavily included I1's/2's/3's.) But...if I had my druthers...my ideal diamond would be a well cut E/F SI1/2, eyeclean and about 1.35 carats. I'd donate whatever was left over to a Newfoundland rescue group. Woof!
Edited to add - I also liked the fact that the G is branded. My marketer's instincts say that a branded stone would have a better chance in the resale market. Not that it would ever come to that!
Sites? For diamonds I would assume? What exactly are you looking for? People on this site are generally very helpful, so just post questions as you go along and you will get alot of help.
thats quite a question...yes, had the charity question not been on the list (its the one I chose), I would have went with the 1.98 H VS2. I think spending 16 g's on a diamond is not wise, considering its value concept mirrors a brand new car...you'll NEVER get back what you paid for it if you decide to sell.
I picked the 1.0 D IF I think 1 carat is definitely enough for me.. and I love the thought.. even tho it's probably just me knowing.. that it's flawless. Also, setting a 1 carat in one of those settings with more diamond decoration all around is
I'm not sure what I'd go for (apparently I did vote when this thread started back in September but I can't recall which stone I chose). . . I'm just not sure if I'd feel comfortable with a 1.6 carat diamond as I'm pretty self conscious and nobody in my social circle has ANYTHING like that, not even a one carat, for that matter. . .sooooo, I guess, realistically, I'd probably go for the one carat D. The idea of "flawlessness" isn't a big deal to me, but I love D stones
Second choice would be the G VVS 1.6, as I'm not entirely sure I'd turn this stone down
I finally went for the 1.98 H VS2 over the 1.6 G VVS branded stone. I didn't want to pay for a brand or for extra clarity that I can't see. The H color made nervous, but my rational was that it is only 1 grade different from G.
I agree with F&I. It depends on where you are in life. I shudder sometimes at what young people are spending on engagement rings when downpayments on houses are so high. However, once you have the basics like a house and cars, you get to spend money on other things less necessary.
