I''d vote for the setting over the larger diamond, because I do think the entire package is important. I also agree with the others that if you can drop you color and clarity requirements you can might get a bigger stone. A SI1 in a well-cut stone can often be eye-clean.
My advice would be to get the larger stone but you do seem to have your heart set on this mounting. Once that happens, it''s hard to turn your back on it without regretting it everyday.
I would however rethink the color/clarity thing. You can get a larger stone if you are willing to go down in one or both categories. I would also call some vendors to discuss some stones. Valeria is right; you would know as much about the stone as Blue Nile. Talk to someone who is holding a stone in their hand. You can always order the setting without a stone.
Is this the setting? It''s very pretty, but seems a little on the expensive side for just a setting with .20 worth of diamonds. Have you inquired about the price in white gold?
That is the setting - I couldn''t get a picture that big for the site. Thanks for the help. I too, think that 1250 is too much for the setting, but they don''t make it in white gold - which I would take in a heart beat. I respect the advice re:SI center stone, but if we purchase it online, how will we know that they placed the prong to cover it? I want an eyeclean stone that is very, very sparkley but I was under the impression that a SI would show up w/o a loupe. I guess I was wrong. oops
I guess we should continue to check out other sites. Thanks for the input. I appreciate it.
I seem to remember someone on P-scope having a similar e-ring setting to your ideal one, who had a difficult/impossible time finding a match that "worked" with it. That''s something to consider. Also ... have you explained that a band will cost $$ too ... maybe you can compromise on a plain metal band to up the e-ring budget a bit ... or budget to get them both at once to make sure they work together.
I think it''s a pretty setting BTW ... I''m just hoping we figure a way for you to get over the .9 mark, with an EYECLEAN stone in a setting you love, that works with a wedding band, in a white metal, that will make your heart sing.
I''ve seen that pre-owned setting on the Pearlman''s "Specials" page, and I kept thinking it would be a WONDERUL buy for someone like lilmaria who wants a beautiful, well-made and unique setting at a reasonable price.
I hope she takes your advice and chooses it before it''s gone!
I''m hardly an expert, but it seems that the inventory for "light carat RBs" (i.e., those that are just under 1 ct.) is a little thin right now ...
If you''re willing to wait a little bit, you might come across an incredible deal on a beautiful diamond that''s just under a carat - - which would give you the best of both worlds in terms of allowing you to get your ''dream setting'', too!
PLUS, anyone on this board will tell you that some well-cut, smaller stones will face-up to look like a full carat ...
For my part, I selected a .93 ct. Solasfera diamond (see: www.GoodOldGold.com and follow the link to "Solasfera") in the (slightly more expensive) setting of my dreams (see my Avatar) ... I will post pics when my ring is ready (which should be very soon!), but before my husband and I finalized our decision (this ring is a 20th anniversary present), Jonathan at Good Old Gold sent us e-photos of my Solasfera diamond next to a 1.01 ct., and honestly, my diamond appeared to be larger (and it was a LOT more brilliant) ...
I think it''s because a well-cut diamond with little or no light leakage and lots of brilliance from edge to edge can appear to have a larger diameter. I''m sure there are others on this Forum with a lot more knowledge who can comment further.
FINALLY, I hope you check-out the setting which Ana (Valeria) linked to at the Pearlman''s (www.Pearlmans.com) "Specials" page ... it''s platinum, very similar in style to the one you selected (with more diamonds around the band) AND it looks like a GREAT buy ...
I really hope this helps you out ... but my vote is for the smaller (but still well-cut and very brilliant diamond) in the setting of your dreams ...
I vote for the 1 carat, & the setting you love.....my sister bought a 1.05 carat RB/ H color/ I-1 clarity for $3,000.00 at The Mart in Atlanta. The cut is terrific, & it''s eye clean!! It sparkles like crazy.....you could lower your standards & still get a beautiful stone if you look for cut quality first. Just don''t let on that you know the clarity......
FWIW, I really don''t think the price is outrageous on the setting you have chosen. Have you priced other settings lately? My goodness, with the way platinum has gone UPUPUP they are all getting very pricey.
I think the setting is quite lovely, too. And since you love it so much, I don''t think you oughtta "settle" for a lesser substitute. I think you''d always regret that.
I''m telling you, drop your color and clarity a little bit, be SUPER picky in choosing a well-cut stone, shop the PS vendors online... and I THINK YOU CAN HAVE IT ALL!
Well, all this talk has me thinking and talking some more. I called my sister in law and she emailed the ring to her jeweler. She said he''ll make it in white gold for me at a fraction of the price. We''re going to stick with the 4500 range and he is going to put the remainder of the money into a stone. She wants me to have atleast one carat & my brother bought her a beautiful ring from this jeweler last year so I''m sure I won''t be disappointed. I told her that I would go w/bluenile if he couldn''t make it but since he can, we''re going to go with him! YEAH!
Now...it''s time for the surprise. Since I know the type of ring I''m getting, my only surprise will be the when and where. I''m hoping soon and romantic/in public/etc.
I''m so happy for you! I think you will be so happy with it. It is such a beautiful setting. By the way, I don''t think $1250 is too much at all for that setting in platinum. I own a white gold three-stone ring and the mounting also has two round sidestones (.10 carats each). I was going to order it in platinum, but they were asking for $1950! Now that''s expensive, if you ask me.
You made a great decision! I hope it all works out perfectly for you!
Sounds like it is all going to work out for you! I really like the setting you chose.
I have really enjoyed having plat in my new setting and I think it will hold up better over the long term. No offense to people with white gold however, it is a great option too and more budget friendly. Anyway, I just wanted to tell you that I found this setting: http://www.overstock.com/?page=proframe&prod_id=1624147
It is almost exactly what you hand in mind but with princess sides instead of round. It is Scott Kay (an excellent designer brand) and costs only $899 - a STEAL for platinum these days and it comes with 1/3 carat diamonds too!! If you got it, you might have to budget $100 or $200 in case the head is not the right size for your diamond, but you might get lucky and it be right. I have ordered several things from Overstock.com and been very pleased. Oh, and it is tax free and cheap shipping!
Just wanted to show you an alternative just in case things fall through with the jeweler. I hope you are very happy with the ring - sounds like it will be a stunner! Be sure to post pics!

This is sort of off topic, but I''m in need of some guidance with diamonds, as I hope to propose soon!
any help greatly appreciated. They''re supposed to be Cdn diamonds.
I put a deposit down and have to purchase from a select few diamonds.
NOt sure which one to go for, and the numbers I have here needs to be deciphered as I''m not sure what all the numbers stand for but here''s what I''ve got. Please correct me if I''m wrong with what the numbers stand for.
#1. .34 carat / measurements: 4.59 x 4.56 x 2.75
Ideal (cut), very good(sym) / E color / vvs-2
