What would you do?

I have decided on my setting. However, I am not sure if I want to go with plat or wg. This is due to budget. The wg version is much less and as I see it that is more money to pur towards my stone but I am worried about the durability of wg. It has no side stones. I don''t want my stone to fall out or something down the line or having the band discolor. I also need to allow money in the budget for my wedding band which will be solid metal not stones so again that will be taking money away from the stone. I know there is the never ending debate of wg/plat but I was just curious as to what others would do in my position. Do you think it is worth sacraficing the size of the stone to go with plat? I am getting closer to making a decision so I need advice. If anyone can share thier experience with either metal I would appriciate it.

White gold requires more frequent maintenance than platinum, but the reality is that any setting is going to require a certain amount of maintenance so go with the white gold and get the diamond that you want. Just know that you will probably have to re-tip the white gold setting two or three years before you would have to re-tip the prongs if the setting were platinum. And the white gold will have a tendancy to oxidize and require more frequent polishing, but that can be alleviated a little bit by having the jeweler rhodium / irridium plate the white gold ring which will give it a brighter appearance and minimize the oxidation process...

The debate of wg/pt has been going on alot ever since the end of the cold war and the platinum refiners spend about 4 billion advertizing that pt was this magical perfect metal...and did a good job of trying to convince people that wg will melt in water, disolve in sunlight ect.

There is a difference between the metals, and there are other options as well such as palladium white gold.

PT is great for heads. its strong, touch, and it does not wear...it does however display every bit of dammage it will ever get on it untill someone removes metal away from it. Its extreamly dense. Wonderful for heads as the abuse on a head does not show very much.

Going with the rest of the ring in white gold or palladium white gold allows a savings on price, as well as the metal does someting that PT does not...self bunishing. the ablity to wear, like a coin, nicks and dings wear off and on with time, keeping an even polish on the hand. Someting that platinum wont do. The palladium is more of a grey white and hypoalergenic like platinum, aka non reacive. It costs just a couple dollars a gram more than regular white gold. So it makes alot of sence.


I work with all 3 metals and I wont say any one is better than another, they are all just different. They all can do different jobs, some of them do better jobs than others at some tasks, some dont.

I will say it makes alot of sence to go with a plat head, and either a nickel whtie or palladium white ring for cost and over all look in 5 years. PT for the ring just gets grey and dingy in time.

If your budget is tight, go with white gold with platinum prongs.

As David suggested, though, go with the palladium alloy. This, as far as I'm concerned, is not something to skimp on. You'll still be quite a bit cheaper than if it were in Plat, but you wouldn't have to worry about maintenance and you'll get a lovely, strong ring.
