I am in an interesting and disturbing situation. I think I know how I will respond but would like to see what you all would do in my situation.

My parents live across the street from a family with 3 daughters and a niece. The niece has had a rough time b/c her dad was never involved in her life and her mom is dying of a brain tumor. This has been going on for years and her aunts (who are not the easiest women) have custody. This girl is 16 and befriended me on FB a long time ago. We don''t communicate except saying hi when I am in town so I was bewildered today when I got a message from her on FB. It was sent to me and about 20 other people (no one I know). The note said "Saw tthat viideo the oother daay... How coulld you do succh a thinng?" She linked a site to an adult friend finder/porno site. I told my mom about it because as an adult and mother I was concerned. I am assuming that she accidently sent it to me and am having a hard time understanding her message. Before anyone asks I am 100% sure there is no video or personal ad for myself on there. It is a delicate situation b/c I know how her aunts will react. Also I feel like it is none of my business but I would want to know if my 16 year old was trolling **** sites or friends with someone who did. My mom said it is up to me how to proceed so I am curious what you would do in this situation.

I have a feeling her account got hacked. She''s probably had weird message written on people''s walls under her account too. It sounds like a typical FB hack.

Maybe someone hijacked her account. I''ve seen some strange messages from people from time to time ... mostly sales messages disguised as a personal message.

Ditto Cello and Deco. Sounds like her account was hacked. It DOES happen on FB, despite what people think. Just the other day my friend''s account was hacked and she was sending random messages to everyone telling them to try some crazy diet.

Yeah it def doesn''t mean she''s been on "Adult Friendfinders" or any **** sites. She''ll probably be mortified when she finds out what happened. It probably targeted her whole friend list. Go to her page & see if other people are asking her "what''s up" & stuff.

I'll willing to bet that she got the same message from one of her friends and clicked on the link, causing it to steal her information. What 16 year old WOULDN'T click on a link sent to her with a subject message like that? Especially if it's from one of her friends.
Since you clicked on the link, you should probably run an antivirus and change your password to be on the safe side. I'm sure you don't want those types of messages going to your friends.

ETA: I should probably edit this to say that a lot of people would probably click on that link, not just a 16 year old.

Hey Tacori. Forgive me for being confused here... Trying to understand , is she on the site that was linked, is that why she's upset? If she's saying how could you do such a thing, is she upset that someone is trying to say she has something to do with said site??
The internet is such a scary place, and if she's involved with some kind of porno site, that's illegal. She is a minor after all...

I am wondering if she has someone else in her life that you could go to?? Since the Aunt's aren't the easiest to deal with??
Oh man this doesn't sound like anything good, but don't know exactly what is going on here.

The other thing I was thinking, maybe you could send her a message on FB and ask her without putting her on the defensive?? Ya know like hey what's going on, am thinking about you..... Generic as possible??

Sorry I am confused, guessing you are too, but bless you for trying to help. You are a dear one!!!

I think just changing your FB password would be okay, at least that''s how it worked "back in the day" on myspace.

Hijack. Your comp will be fine but change your FB passwords just to be safe. Always a good idea to change other passwords too on a regular basis.

I understand your concern but that''s a very common FB hijack. I''ve had it happen to a bunch of my FB friends. It''s not something she''s done wrong- she''s clicked on some infected link at some point (not necessarily a **** link- could be anything) and she''s now been hacked. She''s probably quite embarrassed that this has happened because she now has people thinking she''s into that sort of thing and she''s probably infected other people.

Thanks everyone. I feel so much better now. I don''t really know her so didn''t know if this was out of character or not. I changed my FB password so hopefully I am safe.

I get those a few times a month from friends on FB - as others have said, it's someone hacking into their accounts. At this point I never click on anything at all when I get a link from someone on FB because it's usually a virus. DH's friend clicked on it once (on a PC) and it totally killed his whole computer - he had to buy a new one. I really don't think the girl sent it out herself, and it's possible she didn't even know it was sent from her profile.

The other ladies are right, account hijacking. This spreads across accounts because every time someone clicks on that link in the message, it gives permission to access their account, which then sends the message further and it continues to propagate. It doesn''t actually steal passwords though. Just don''t click on the link and you''ll be fine.

I got that exact one from a couple people - she got hacked, it''s ok. Just delete and change your passwords.

I think the strange spelling in the sublect make it seems more like a hijack. I get strange spam all the time with spelling like that, I think it overrisdes/avoids filters or something?

Tacori -- that''s odd, I got the exact same message from D''s sister in law. At first I was offended that she''s send something like that and then I realized that there''s no way she ever would have. I think someone hacked in. This message was also sent to several people. I didn''t even question her about it -- I just deleted it and let it go.

I got a message similar to that from one of my friends on FB. He sent a message a few minutes later saying that it wasn''t him. Wow. I don''t think that I clicked any link though I just opened the message. I sure hope that it doesn''t do anything because I did it at work. Well at least it was on a co-workers computer. I am not allowed to access FB, but he is an administrator so he doesn''t have the lock down.

I didn't read all the responses but it could be a virus. I had a friend send me a wall message that said "can't believe this is on facebook!" with a link attached. I didn't touch it...this friend is a mom of 3 and never on FB..didn't seem to line up. Got another one in a few weeks..."Look at this" or something along those lines. Didn't touch and sent her an email saying I was getting these weird messages..she then sent out a blast to everyone saying her computer must've been infected, sending out bogus messages--please don't click.

So it's just a thought. Maybe check with her to see..although if it WAS intended, she might be horrified.

And if it is a virus, hope I don't get these messages from you soon on FB ;))

UPDATE: you are all very wise and much more savvy than I am. I of course never even thought it would have been hijacked so I am so glad I started this thread. The girl put an explanation on her wall. *phew* I did click on the site so hopefully my computer is ok. Hasn''t been acting funky yet.

It was on my other account so you should all be safe!

Phew! One good reason to not connect to anyone from work! (how embarrassing if it got hijacked and sent out these links). Good thing you didn''t have a sit down with the aunt...

OMG I know! If you aren''t one who checks your FB regularly it could have gone on for awhile.
