My brother had a failed marriage and he decided to give me his ex''s engagement.

It is a small (.25 ct) but high quality (D color vs) solitaire in a basket setting, flanked by two thin V-shape bagguet. I am not sure how good the cut is but the color and clarity are confirmed. It looks really silly on my finger (I have fat hand) but I don''t want to waste the high quality diamond by keeping it in the safe. Since it it so small (4.2mm), what should I do with it? If I reset it, what types of mounting should I chose to make it look more substantial?

I am running out the door now but will post picture of it later.

Thanks for your suggestions!

make it a sidestone.

either make it a sidestone or bezel it (and a matching stone) for some mini studs..

bezel it for a pendant like a diamonds by the yard kind of look.

I''d use it as an accent stone with a lovely colored stone and make them into a pendant.

Get a pair shaped gemstone and dangle it below it on a pendant.

I would get two colored stones of the same size to band a three-stone ring with it.

Sell it on ebay and be done with it. I wouldn''t want to wear the diamond because how odd for your brother to have to look at it in any form.

Studs! Your bro was kind enough to give it to you, a sale will only be more good money lost, and bros rarely notice their sister''s earrings. You could even...in the far future, give the studs to a future daughter of his since you will have worn the bad juju off of them by then. Just sort of as a tribute to your brother''s generosity and your close relationship. (I have to assume since he gave you a diamond to dispose of!)

Well don''t sell it. If your brother wanted to sell it he would have, but he wanted you to have something nice instead. You could make it a side stone for another ring, do earrings, a pendant... lots of options! I love necklaces with a small floating diamond. So pretty!

I like this idea!

I would bezel it and make it a rhr.

Get another .25 and make yourself earring! I have 2 holes in my ears and would love to wear that size!!! :)

How long have you had the diamond? Maybe sit and think about it for a while before jumping into any planning stage. Reason being, I have a .38 D VS2 that my mom gave me and there were strings tied to the diamond. It was set into a TBTY pendant, made out of platinum, and custom designed and I barely wear it because I always feel kind of awkward. Later, I bought a second solitaire instead that I feel good wearing.

I would sit on it and in a few months/years you might find something perfect

But then, I don''t believe that rocks come with bad juju

I like this.

Almost forgot to show the picture for size! Here it is next to my cluster ring to show how "weak" it looks alone. The ring is from bro''s 1st marriage a LONG time ago so the negative sentiment in our family with this ring is gone.

I love all of your ideas! I will prob. save it for now until a companion diamond or gem stone "comes into my life".

Zhuzhu - I think you are lucky! I have hands similar to yours but with very short pinkies! Yours are long! You can wear this ring on your pinky and it will look fine. I have grown out of most of my rings and can not even wear them on my pinkies, the rings cover most of them. If I were you, I''d wear it on a pinky till I''d get a better idea. I was "sitting" on my rings - and then gained 4 sizes in two years!

Ooo ditto. A three stone with bezeled haloed stones... (yes i am describing my future RHR haha... one day....)

Or studs, that''s my second favorite idea.

I would either make it into a pendant (I like the suggestion of adding a pear shaped colored gemstone) or reset it into a simple ring.

Not even sure why this came to mind as I don't have kids of my own and not sure I am going to....but if you have kids or are thinking of it (or even have nieces/goddaughters or anything similar), I thought maybe sitting on it a few years and making it into one of those suggestions for a daughter/niece/goddaughter's milestone (be it a birthday, a graduation, winning an award, etc) would be a lovely idea too. A 4.2mm diamond would look huge for her!
