I was just maybe offered me one of my grandma''s diamonds (need to check with other family members, but wanted to make sure I was interested). I was proposed to with a placeholder ring, and 6 months later, FI and I are getting around to looking for a replacement. I had planned on getting a cushion stone, maybe .8 ct and doing a custom bezel setting (very similar to neatfreaks ring).

The stone I''ve been maybe offered is a round, it belonged to a friend of my grandma''s. I''ve only really looked at it closely once (I hang around here, but I''m far from an expert). My mom thinks it''s bigger than her .75 ct stone, but I thought it looked smaller (I''ve never compared side by side). It has a high crown and probably a thin girdle (there is one tiny chip), so I''m guessing its an old european cut (but thats a guess).

I had originally wanted a round stone and love the idea of an old stone, especially a family one, but I''d gotten kind of attached to the idea of a cushion lately. I''m fairly certain that it is expected that I use this for my ering.

I guess I have two questions. I''m pretty set on a bezel setting (no pun intended)--I''m hard on my hands and so I like the security of it, plus I like the clean look. Would a bezel setting be appropriate for an OEC (if that is what it is)? What would you do in my situation?

grab the stone first

then ask Qs later.

My engagement ring is a bezel-set OEC so yes, I think that setting is certainly appropriate for that type of stone.

Personally, if I liked the stone, I would absolutely accept and be honored by the gift of an heirloom diamond. There''s always room for a cushion RHR, after all.

Thanks Liane! I had this sudden fear of taking the ring to be set and being told I couldn''t possible have it set that way for some odd reason....

Also, I''m really not a huge jewelry person, so a RHR is probably not in my future. Maybe a pendant someday, but there won''t be many diamonds in my future (I know, I know, I shouldn''t even say that here!). I think that makes me want my ering to be just right, since it''s all I''ll wear most of the time.

Ok first of that line does not compute.. ha ha ha..

I personally would want the stone me and my fiance picked out together. It''s beautiful to have an heirloom, but I think that should come from HIS side of the family if it''s to be an engagement ring. The engagement ring to me, is the reflection of the couple and I think of heirlooms as the reflection of whoever I inherited it from. That being said, I think it would be nice as a pendant as your "something old" on your wedding day.. The kind of thing that all the female children in the family would wear on their wedding day, but wouldn''t necessarily be "owned" by anyone.

Can you have both? I'd prefer a stone DH and I picked out, but wouldn't turn down a OEC either! If the stone has a chip, I'd prefer it as a pendant. Not sure about a bezel with that style.

Ditto! I think the pendant idea is lovely and would make a special piece to wear on your wedding day and then you can get the cushion you had your heart set on for your ring.
