What Would You Choose - Spinel & Diamond Ring or Necklace?

I'm not sure whether to post this in RT or CS but I think RT gets more traffic so here goes...

I recently purchased a 5mm transitional cut diamond off eBay. Sold to me as H VS2, I think it's more like low I/high J, but the clarity seems accurate. I made a dbty style necklace. But I don't ever wear it. Alone, it's a bit too dainty for me. I don't wear necklace often, and if I do I like to wear a diamond leaf pendant and silver acorn tags with my kids' initials engraved. I tried layering the dbty necklace on top, but it was too busy for me.

I've always liked black and white jewelry, and have been lurking in CS for a few months. I got what I thought was a dark grey spinel off eBay and just received it today. It's actually more like grey with flashes of dark teal in direct sun. Wasn't what I was expecting, but I like it! (I knew it was a gamble and I was prepared for the outcome either way.) I also got another used .5ct diamond off eBay, this one is more like RB faceting and the color matches my transitional cut.

So - I'm pondering two choices on what do to with my grey spinel and two diamonds.

A) Turn it into a three stone bezel ring. The spinel is approximately 9.1mm x 7.5mm X 5.8mm deep.



EW orientation. I think I like the NS better.

B) I can bezel the spinel and the other diamond and add it to the necklace so that it's a three stone dbty necklace.



The mismatched diamond faceting doesn't bother me in the least. My main concern is that they are of the same color and they are.

I'm torn. I generally prefer wearing rings, but I will have about three CS RHR when I've set all my gemstones. (And then I SWEAR I am DONE.) Also, if I turn this into a ring then I will have lost over $700 I've spent on the necklace setting. I'm not interested in selling this necklace and looking for a new diamond. If I keep it as a necklace, my main concern is that it will look weird somehow? I've never really seen a necklace like this before.

So - WWYD? Any comments/advice appreciated.

I like the look of your necklace idea! If you are ok w the mis matched diamonds and to your eye, they are the same colour, then that looks very unique! You said you love the spinel colour regardless and like the idea of B&W jewellry - I think this fits your bill!

Have the other 2 stones bezelled to match the existing one, right? It would be cool! Go for it! Can't wait to hear what you decide on!

I like your new stone, sapphirering! That said, I don't like the look of two rounds next to a cushion - either on a ring or in a necklace. I just don't care for the shapes together. I'd prefer something like a 5 stone with traps and bullets, a 3 stone with pear sides, or a tapered channel-set sidestone like Art Nouveau's MP Tourmaline. There are pendants that hang from a chain with a bezeled diamond on each side of the area where the pendant hangs. I'll try my best to find a picture. But the spinel would be set with a bail that would hang on the chain. If it is removable (bail would have to fit over the bezelled diamonds or either have a latch), then you could hang other things on the chain.

I would wear a ring more, but I think in a ring, the sidestones are going to need to be a very close match whereas in the necklace, it wouldn't matter as much.

Okay, after a quick look, I couldn't find exactly what I wanted, but here's a CS pendant hanging from a diamond chain. I have seen them with just a diamond bezel on each side of the pendant, though. Maybe you can get an idea. I just think the spinel would need to hang down from the chain because it would be really huge to bezel on that chain.

Hi Enerchi - Yes, I would bezel the two stones to match the existing one. I might bezel the spinel in yellow gold though- I like the combo of yellow and grey- but I'll have to think about that idea more.

Hi DS - I'm not sure that the bail idea would work because my diamond stones are 5mm without the bezel. Also, I'd prefer a true dbty look. I know matching sidestone makes more sense, but I truly don't mind the stones being off in faceting. In fact, I think it's kinda cool.
