I received $1500 from my grandmother and am trying to decide what to do with it. I can use towards an upgrade on my WF diamond (it would get me to about 3/4 carat or so).

I''m also trying to think of other jewelry ideas. I already have 1ctw diamond studs, so I don''t need those. Most things that I would want cost a lot more than $1500, such as the size eternity band I want, and I''m sure diamond huggies are out of budget. I have a diamond pendant already too. So should I go for the upgrade or get a new piece of jewelry? WWYD?

If you upgrade, will you be able to reuse your current setting? $1.5K is a nice lump of cash to use for an upgrade and going up to 0.75 ct will be a good sized jump. That is what I would choose.

What size if your current stone?

I''m with DeeJay-that was my first question.

If the .75 will be a nice jump, I''d go for the upgrade for sure. If it''s not a huge jump, I''d maybe save up a little bit more to get a significant bump up in size.

I can use the same setting...it''s in a basic 6 prong WG solitaire right now, so I think they just have to change the head. I figured that this setting would be the easiest thing to have while going through the upgrade process. I was just wondering if people had other ideas that I hadn''t thought of.

The size of my current, upgradeable stone is .57ct, so I figured I could get .75 or so. It wouldn''t be a huge jump, but noticable I think, right? Or no?

I''d upgrade or get the WF bangle. But that''s because I REALLY want that bangle. Diamond huggies are not out of the question at that price. GOG had a pair I was looking at with H&A cut diamonds H/I color that were LOVELY for less than that. I''d contract Marie if your interested. Pearlmans has some too that are very nice. And KT''s fishtail huggies from WF when I asked for a qoute were only a little above that I believe, and they are stunning.

I checked that most 0.57 ct stones measure about 5.3 mm and most 0.75 ct stones measure around 5.9 mm. There is a different of at least 0.5 mm which is noticeable to the eye. I'm sure there must be some graphic around PS to show this size increase.

In fact, Maisie just upgraded from a 0.55 ct to a 0.75 ct then onwards to over 1 carat (but that's another story

There's life sized pictures of various sized diamonds from 5.7 mm to 7 mm here:

It's not exactly what you are looking for but you'll get a feel for what 0.5 mm difference looks like.

Ohhh- Gypsy''s WF bangle suggestion is a good one! That was my wedding present from DH and I love it. It''s a classic piece that will never go out of style.

or how about some stud jackets like Mara''s?

decisions, decisions!!

Or, I also like the WF Diamond by the yard neclace.... What a nice gift from your grandmother

Can''t wait to see what you decide.

well, my first thought was go for the upgrade as this is a generous gift from some close to you, and what a nice way to commemorate that. i was thinking this would add to your ring''s sentimentality. but then it occurred to me that it doesn''t sound as though you would be done upgrading, in which case after your next upgrade there would be nothing to remember her by (not directly tied to her). so then i thought, get something else, that you will always have and keep, so that when you wear it/look at it you will be reminded of this wonderful (i assume) person in your life.

it also occurred to me, though, that this gift sure helps you make a jump in your upgrade process. it gets you closer to your goal without you paying for this step. however, i still prefer the idea of having something to remind you of your grandmother that you won''t ever trade in.

well, i guess i just addressed the psychology of it and not your real question. as for what to buy if you don''t do the upgrade...... where do i start?!?

I would use it to get a new piece of jewelry or a stone to be set later or a bracelet [or even an LV bag

]. I like to keep gifts like that discrete so that when I look at it I think of the giver. I would also go with something lasting.

ETA: LOL! I didn't see all the references to the WF bangle! Now I'll have to go find it!
E again TA: Yup. I like the bangle.

YES!

The bangle is gorgeous and the perfect addition to a collection.

I love the bangle idea. Also, I''d consider getting a nice gemstone piece, a ring or a pendant, or both. You could get quite a gemstone ring for that price.

I second the gemstone idea. Do you have any RHRs? Maybe your birthstone or just a color you like. It''s be yummy!

I would definitely go for the upgrade if that is the case! That should be a very noticeable jump! I like the WF bangle, too, but I think this gift is perfect for using for an upgrade. Plus that was the first thing you thought of, so I think that means you want the upgrade the most!

I would go for the upgrade. Even if you do upgrade again in the future, your grandma would still have played a part in it, and it''s not like she actually picked out and bought the stone.

The WF bangles are very pretty, but I don''t find bangles to be very comfortable on me. I do like the DBTY look, but I wonder what size stones I can get in either a necklace or bracelet...I don''t want them too tiny LOL!

This is EXACTLY what''s going through my mind! If I did the upgrade, it won''t be the last one so I''d feel like the $1500 would "get lost" down the road, if that makes sense. But at the same time, I really want a bigger diamond! Hmmm.....

A colored stone is a good idea. I have no idea what stone or setting, except that diamonds would have to be included LOL!

The DBTY yard is so cute, but for $1500, the diamonds probably will be tiny! The upgrade idea sounds the best, unless you don''t think you''re making the best use of your present. Plus if you upgrade your stone again, you won''t be able to keep the "present" your grandmother gave you, sort of loosing the sentimental value.

The diamond jackets Mara posted are really cute and would be amazing on 1ctw studs. I''m thinking of getting them for my .82 studs sometime in the future.

I tried on a few DBTY necklaces at Tiffany last weekend and fell in love. I am going to have WF make me one next year. On me at least, I thought the perfect spacing was to have 5 stones with 2" of chain between each stone. The .14 ct stones looked great in the tiny bezels, but the .07 stones were too small for me. WF is selling the DBTY in 18K white gold with F/G color, VS clarity and 14 stones totalling 0.75 ct for $1,450. It might be worth asking what they would charge for 5 0.14 stones (.70 tcw) in H or I color.
