What was the first major news story you remember as a child?

i forgot i remember seeing images of the vietnam war and also of the protests when the soliders came home on the news
i guess it would have been on the news every night when i was really little, from a NZ and an American perspective
that would really be my earliest news memory but i wouldn't have really understood what was going on

I remember the Mt St. Helens erupting being major news in 1980, we were living in Seattle at the time, and I was 7 and really worried about being burned by ash.

and esoecially now i live near a volcano

Like many others, the JFK assassination. While I was very young, I still recall wondering "why is my Mother crying"?

I can vaguely remember the JFK assassination. My brother heard the horrible news on the radio. I was 5 yrs old still living in HK.

Winter Olympics 1994. Then OJ's trial. Then Monica Lewinsky. Bombing of the Chinese embassy in Kosovo and breakup of Yugoslavia. After that, the Y2K panic. Next, second war in Chechnya. 9/11. Then I was no longer a child.
