I was thinking about places I want to visit with DH and I started to think about how there are SO MANY amazing places in the world to go see and travel to. So I started to wonder what everyones'' favorite vacation was. What was your favorite vacation - where did you go and what made it so great?

My favorite vacation so far has been our honeymoon - we went to Hawaii (Oahu and Maui) and just had the most amazing time snorkeling, hiking, kayaking, relaxing, and swimming. The views were breathtaking everywhere and I never wanted to leave. I can''t wait to go back one day.

So what was the best vacation you''ve ever been on?

So far for me it was when I drove to Miami from Mass. by myself. I was supposed to go with a friend, three days before she backed out so decided to go on my own. I love to drive so getting there was great fun (minus the ocassional southern thunderstorms) I checked out the club scene, the beaches in the evening, the restaurants, went window shopping, flirted- it was fantastic.

I did enjoy London for my honeymoon in 2006, but that was tainted since my lugagge got lost. I had a high school exchange trip to Italy but it was a controlled situation since we always had to be in groups.

On the 18th of this month I''m going to Germany to see my brother. That should be a great time since I''ve wanted to go back to Europe so bad. Problem is I''m going by myself and I''m terrified of flying so if I can survive the flight, it should be an amazing time.

Acadia National Park, Maine.

simply breathtaking.

Any vacation with my mommy! We have such a good time together. So far we''ve been to Paris, London, NY, and Las Vegas. I think Paris and NY are my favs.

My best vacation was also my honeymoon. We were married and honeymooned at the Beaches resort in Turks and Caicos. All inclusives are great! What made is so nice for us was that the weather was perfect, the place was beautiful, neat, clean, perfectly kept up; anything we needed or wanted- was provided for free with a smile. We lived every day all day in a bathing suit and only dressed nicely for dinner. We didn''t want to keep to any kind of schedule, so this was perfect for us since we were able to eat any time between 7:00 am (in the morning) and 2:00 am the next day with an awesome choice of restaurants and eateries. We slept when we wanted to sleep, and danced and played when we wanted to. It was heaven on earth for eight days. We would love to go back, but the prices have gotten so high, they''re out of our price range now. I''m glad we got the chance to go when we did.

Let''s see...I''ve been on some pretty incredible trips.

I think of all of them, it comes down to my first trip to Paris or hiking for a week in Tasmania. Hiking probably wins. It was absolutely gorgeous, and I felt so great about myself. I walked 80km with 25lbs on my back and I lived to tell about it, lol! It was just one of those trips you look back on and say, "I can''t believe I did that. That''s incredible!"

For me, vacations are about relaxation and indulgence, but I also like to know I can partake in a variety of activities. Two trips stand out as favorites - one was a trip to the Charleston, SC area with a group of good girlfriends and the other was a trip to Napa with my BF. I''ve definitely been to more "exotic" places, but I loved how I felt and the memories I had when I returned from these trips.

For the Charleston trip, we rented a beautiful house near the beach that was within driving distance to downtown Charleston. So we split our time between touring the city, shopping, going out to eat and staying back at our rental, where we could go the beach, read, cook dinner together, etc. I came back feeling totally relaxed and even closer to my friends.

For the Napa trip, we flew into SFO and spent time visiting cool spots along the coast as we drove up to Napa Valley - lunch in Tiburon, a walk on Muir Beach, a stop at BF''s favorite microbrewery. That was a mini-trip in itself! Then the time up in wine country was just spectacular. Great food, great wine, fantastic weather, gorgeous scenery, a visit to a spa... every aspect of the trip was enjoyable. Again - we came back feeling rejuvenated and feeling even closer to one another.

I think in both cases, I loved my travel-mates, and we shared similar goals and expectations for the trip.

Cannes, France. I never wanted to leave and I''m still wishing I could go back 3 years later! We drove to several really cool places and enjoyed the beautiful beach. I could go on forever, but won''t bore ya!

Has anyone been to Dubai? I saw a special on TV about it and it looks like it would be incredible.

Hubby and I went to Italy three years ago. It was the most fun and memorable trip I''ve ever taken (and I''m OLD)!! We spent 12 days, started in Venice, then to Florence, Tuscany, and finished in Rome. With two teenage children we rarely get time to just do what we want when we want, and it was so enjoyable!! I planned the whole thing and we were totally flexible. Great food, great sites, lots of laughs and romantic walks through history.... Italy and ours. I would totally go back in a second!

Hands down, my trip to Ireland. I had insanely good time and took the trip myself (although it didn''t stay that way very long. The Irish were pretty curious about a solo Korean female traveler!)

I loved my 4 month backpacking trip to Europe when I turned 30, but that was obviously a much broader trip. From that trip, I remember my time in Croatia and the Czech Republic most fondly.

I second Italy; we went for our Honeymoon and it was one of the nicest trips we have been on. We had people (chauffeur us around, nicest hotels); will we do it that way again, probably not, but it was our honeymoon and everything was incredible!!! We did go to Como, Sorrento, and Capri also, and those I loved the best; it is our 10 yr anniversary so I am thinking about going back since we loved it so much.

Another place that has stole my heart is Kauai; I love it and hope to someday retire there.

Im not well traveled like many on the forum ,but hands down for me the best two vacations thus far...Hawii and Washington DC(the smithsonian, the art museams, the monuments, the food, and the Hope diamond made it a really great trip!)

Oh my gosh, that''s so difficult. I think everything considered I''d have to say Paris since we got engaged on that trip and it was very meaningful to me. Italy would have to be #2, then Ireland #3, Hawaii #4 and our domestic road trip through the Southwest and up the coast of CA would be #5--I liked that trip better than any Caribbean trip we''ve taken (though I also love the caribbean).

I also live for weekend trips (BeachRunner mentioned Acadia Nat''l Park, which I love)

I still have a bucket list with about 10 trips on it, so the best might be yet to come!

One week, one motorcycle, no destination, no time table, just started riding--no interstates, two lane highways only, thank you. Ended up in Estes Park and Colorado Springs. I want to do it again and venture in another direction.

Skippy, I love your list! BTW, did you see the story in the news about the statues found in Capri''s Blue grotto this last week?: http://dsc.discovery.com/news/2009/09/28/blue-grotto-statues.html

Two weeks (not enough time!) in Italy. Florence, Rome and Venice. I'd like to return at some point with my husband.

My best vacations have been at The Cape (Cod, that is

). Been going there since I was a kid and it''s still my favorite place.

I also loved Mexico, California and the Florida Keys.

For us, it has to be Germany and Austria. Loved it there.

I agree with the others that Italy was the best vacation ever! So much history! Bolzano, Verona, Venice, Florence, Tuscany and Rome! Second best was Melbourne, Australia.

Chartering a sailboat in the British Virgin Islands. Just got back from Rarotonga, Cook Islands and that is a close second. Heck, since Raro was my honeymoon I suppose I should be saying that one.

These are two destinations at the top of my list! I''ve always wanted to go to Egypt, but it might be easier to get my husband to Greece.

DITTO this -- though I go back & forth as to whether Paris or Italy is #1. For me Paris I guess because I''ve visited with my sister & father & also with my brother another time. Italy (Florence, Venice, Cinque Terra) I went solo, though I''m dying to take DH there in the next year or so. He & I had a great honeymoon in Ireland (thanks to many pscoper''s genius travel advice). For pure relaxation, I also really enjoyed both Antigua and St. Lucia.

Tops on my Never Been list is Greece. I was scheduled to go on a sailing trip there about eight years ago but had to cancel to take a job I really wanted. Never gotten a chance to go again since. Fingers crossed for mucho work this year & ample enough savings to splurge on a fantasy Greek Isles vaca.

Maybe I''ll just shoot for this *decade*

Another vote for Italy. Rome, Positano (oh how I loved the Amalfi Coast!), Arezzo, Gargonza, Pisa, Florence. I mean LOOK at this place! And to think, I would never have known about it had I not started my planning on PS!

Positano is pretty for sure. But I''m probably the only crazy one who thought Sorrento was really ick. I think I would have preferred the Cinque Terre over Amalfi.

My family might move there, and I''m really excited to go visit them if they do (not that visiting them right now is too shabby - I''m kind of in love with The Netherlands).

Our best vacation so far has been our 4.5 week trip to Switzerland (had friends there who lent us their car

), France, Germany (saw the house where hubby lived growing up) and Denmark. We had hoped we could pack more into our itinerary, but because we saw and stayed in some fascinating places, we lingered too long.

The trip was a celebration of our 25th anniversary.

I really wanted to go to Cinque Terra, but we didn''t have enough time. I didn''t go to Sorrento, just walked/bussed between Positano, Praiano and Amalfi. Driving through Sorrento, I felt like it was too big and didn''t seem to have the charm the other coastal towns had. JMO.
