We have a rouge stained maple floor throughout our first floor, and I love it. Although, if we were doing it all over again, I would have gone with a less red-brown finish and opted for Hickory.

Something like this - http://www.lumberliquidators.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=5132&categoryId=5&sectionId=1&subCategoryId=50
The hickory looks nice, but I think we'd like a little bit of a warmer finish. Do you have any pictures of your floor?

Side note to anyone, is it really important to stain floors or can you just finish them and leave the original color?
Sorry I didn't see this until today, LP . . . here are a couple of pics of our living room. I love the warm glow this colour gives off, and I LOVE the grain of the maple.

One more pic. We've been in this house for two years, and other than a couple of places where ANY wood floor would have been dinged, we're really happy with how it's held up.

In the few damaged places, I dropped a jar/can/heavy porcelain bowl/couch.

Packrat, I love it. Of course, like I said, I don''t know about the durabilty or the price, I just adore the look of it.

iluvcarats, that''s good to know... and yes, people do pay for that!

I know a couple of people who have gotten ''reclaimed'' (I don''t know if that''s the right term) wood floors and they are lovely. My favorite floors are darker, personally, but I would worry if the dark color was a stain about scratches being lighter in color. I don''t know how deep stain penetrates, but I have seen some floors with dark stain and lighter scratches and it really looks unattractive.

Walnut is also my favorite wood for furniture too. I just love it.

My neighbor''s have maple and their hardwoods look *really* bad. Scratches, dents...mostly from a dog but I am sure the three kids don''t help. As much as I hate oak they are very durable for flooring. We have that but I do wish they were stained darker to hide some of the grain.

Lauren, love your style as usual!

Thanks, Dani! We're really excited, but a little overwhelmed by trying to get stuff done before we move in.

We're doing the floors and also knocking out the existing wall & doorway to the bedroom in the first picture in this thread and moving it down the hall to open up the room.

Thanks for all the input so far, everyone. I do have a couple querstions about oak floors, which is what is the major difference between red oak and white oak? Also, does having quarter sawn oak make a huge difference? We have a quote from our flooring guy that has 4 different options--2 1/4 flat sawn white oak, 3 1/4 flat sawn white oak, 2 1/4 quarter sawn white oak and 3 1/4 quarter sawn white oak. I'm sure we could get quotes for other types of woods as well.

He also said that the narrower boards would have more of a period look. Thoughts?

LP, I called up my Dad just for you, he does custom woodworking.

He said as far as terms of hardness, white oak is slightly harder then red, but that you really would not notice a difference--except in pricing. White oak costs a lot more then red. Also, on the way the wood is sawn. He said quarter sawn oak is primarily used for furniture, and while it is prettier, there is nothing that would necessarily make it better for flooring. Again, it is considerably more expensive then flat sawn oak would be. I hope this helps, good luck!

We have heart pine flooring (original to the house) but I ditto the oak recommendation; hard wearing and really can be finished to a number of different colors/tones. I would only stain light to honey colored to keep it in character to the age of your house. You don''t have to stain it, but you do need to seal the floor somehow to prevent it from staining. I also like the bonakemi floor finishers/cleaners. We had our wood floors for years before we found out we were not cleaning them properly!

Thank you, Tacori!

I''m hoping our maple wears ok. . . do you know if your neighbours have engineered or solid hardwood?

LtP--I LOVE your space! Your floors look beautiful.

I think we''ve decided on oak for sure, so we''re going to find out what the pricing difference is between white and red. I''ll post pictures next month once the new floor is in!

Is engineered fake like pergo or something different? I would guess real but not 100% positive. Their floor is a light stain.

Well, they finished our new floors today and I wanted to give you guys a peek at how they came out! We ended up going with quarter sawn white oak and they are GORGEOUS! I can''t wait until we finish painting and we get the quarter round down. Then I can do a proper "Our house is done!" thread.

Here''s the floors from the top of the stairs. The walls will be painted a warm peachy color (Jumel Peachtown from Benjamin Moore''s Historical Line).

One more--this is in the guest room. The walls in here will be Yarmouth Blue from BM's Historical Line. Please ignore the painter's tape in both pictures!

LP - your floors look crazy pretty, my dear! I''m loving the colours you''re planning in painting, as well!

They look great! House projects are so exciting!

LP -- I love the floors! I can''t remember if I''ve said so before, but congratulations on buying the house!
