Hi all,

My mom is thinking of making an offer on this ring and has asked me for advice. What would you think would be a good deal on this ring?

It's advertised as a 2.08 ct K/L, VS in a vintage platinum mount. Pictures look quite yellow to me, but the cut looks lovely. The seller is asking $13,500 which seems very high to me for Ebay. There is a good return policy and my mom definitely plans on having it appraised. Would appreciate your thoughts! Thanks!!

Is that seller accepting offers on that stone?

I am using two recent sales on DB as my comps, both for diamonds a little over 2ct, with reliable lab reports or appraisals, that were L color and went for $9k. So for that stone with no appraisals I would not really pay more than about $8k. I don't think that seller will go so low though :blackeye:

ETA: The stone looks *very* tinted to me. I would assume N color by those photos. That affects value a lot.

it's a stunning stone though!!

Thanks, Dreamer! I was hoping you would chime in. Yes, that seller is accepting offers. That amount is exactly what I was thinking as well and I suspect you're right that there is no way she will go that low. My mom just missed out on the 2ct L that just sold on DB. Too bad as those kinds of deals are few and far between.

What do you think of the cut on this stone?

Wow.. beautiful stone... I hope they take that offer!!!

I edited my other post to add that the stone looks like it could be as low as N color, which affects price a lot. I am not sure even $8k is the right price!

The cut is very nice! The first shot shows a little black from the camera but it is less than you can see with a picture like that. Crown height looks a little "lowish", and the table a wee bit larger, so it looks like a later style OEC. I've seen a stone with similar proportions and it tends to whiter light return over fire. I like the stone, but the body color and lack of appraisal makes me very hesitant about that price point. Here is a retail comp for less money!! : http://www.oldworlddiamonds.com/detail.php?ID=2704&SHAPE=EU

I agree that it looks very yellow -- much more tinted than K/L. The ad categorizes the stone as a transitional actually, so I think you're right about the lower crown and bigger table. It's so hard to determine value for these old cuts. There was a 2.2 ct OEC on JbEG that was N/O, VS (EGL) that just sold for 10k, but that stone had a cert and comes from a reputable vendor. This Ebay stone has no documents whatsoever. I think I'm going to tell my mom to pass on this one. I'm quite sure the seller wouldn't go down $5500 anyway. If you happen to stumble upon a good OEC at around this price point, please let me know! Thanks!!

Seems to me that larger OECs are rare on ebat these days, unless they are being offered by the sharks (aka professionals). I'll let you know if I see anything!

Hi Kennedy, I offered him 7k for just the stone and he said the lowest he would go was 9k. He kind of got attitude when I asked about the color and suggested that it was lower than a L, which totally turned me off!
I have been looking in the 2 to 3ct range on ebay and nothing reasonable for months now.....it's so frustrating!
Good luck with your search.

Oh yes, this was on my list, but I wear a size 4.25 and it's a 9.75 - I thought the return policy was a little odd, too (do they accept returns or not?) - I agree the pics are bad, but it does look like it has potential.

Send them these listings as comps. I would. Kennedy is this for you? Are you keeping your other ring, cause if you aren't... um, damn I wish I could buy it.

Gypsy....I beleive the new ring is for her mother.
But I hear you about kennedy's ring

Ahh, I need to read more carefully. I think that if the pics are accurate that one is gonna be in S/T range for color.

chupiechow -- Thanks for that information. That's very helpful and very interesting. I'm definitely going to tell my mom to pass on this one! Good luck on your search!!

Dreamer -- That ring is beautiful! Too bad it can't be sized down more than 2.5 sizes -- my mom is a size 5.

Gypsy -- Yup, it's for my mom. I'm holding onto my ring....for now. I agree that the Ebay stone looks more like an S/T....there's just no way that's a K/L. It looks very yellow in almost every picture. Pretty facet pattern, though. And good pics!

Well, hopefully another great deal will come along! Still kicking myself that we missed out on that awesome stone on DB!

Kennedy, I purchased an OEC from that seller of your original link/stone, the 2.25c... he was great to work with.

The stone I bought, I ended up sending back because it had a tinge of brown to the stone vs a gray or yellow for warmth and it would have been too hard to match with other stones. But it was still a lovely stone. The jeweler said it was in the color range that he suggested it was, but with the brown tone it made it look a little different.

He offered me a discount on the stone if I wanted to keep it and I was tempted, but in the end I sent it back. He refunded me promptly and was easy to work with.

Because of that I would easily buy from him again. I have seen that ring you posted for about 4months now and I think he may have dropped the price or maybe he just put the 'offer' button on it, whereas it was not there before. That pattern is simply FANTASTIC...if I was in the market for a 2c I would completely consider that for $9k, you can scrap the setting or resell it and recoup some funds. And 9k for a 2c L VVS stellar cut would still be a great price IMO. From the pics he posted, actually I would say K/L...Maybe M is about right.

Anyway, just thought I'd chime in with my experience with the seller because in your shoes I might just buy the stone, take it to a jeweler, have it checked out and then return it or negotiate with the seller if it comes back as something different.

I think your mom can find some really great 2c stones a lot higher in color here for under $10,000. Best site ever for OEC's. Been looking for a larger carat OEC and ran across this site today. Very impressive. Be sure she finds one with a high crown. They are lovely. Lots to choose from in her price range. http://www.antiquejewelryforsale.com

http://www.antiquejewelryforsale.com/viewProduct-548-PLATINUM_1920_ENGAGEMENT_RING.html# 2.1c K vs $9,500
http://www.antiquejewelryforsale.com/viewProduct-521-PLATINUM_2_CT_ENGAGEMENT_RING.html# 2c J vs1 $9,500
http://www.antiquejewelryforsale.com/viewProduct-480-PLATINUM_ANTIQUE_ENGAGEMENT_RING.html H SI1 $9,500

If this guy has SKYPE maybe he could show her several of his rings on skype and she could pick the one she likes best...just a thought. Just nice to be able to make side by side comparisons and choose. :!:

The cut of the stone on ebay looks lovely and I really like the ring too. If she goes to erica grace's site she can watch her videos and see if the lower color stones are to her liking. But I agree that price seems high for that color stone. BUT if the stone has a great cut and lots of fire it may be worth a little more. www.jewelsbyericagrace.com

You need more info. on that stone from ebay to see if it is a good cut and not too shallow. Looks like there is some windowing (see the persons skin thru the facets) in one of those pictures. 59 -60% depth is the shallowest depth I would consider. Look at the spec's on GOG on his OEC's and look for stones with depth and tables that are close to those. Also crown heights are very attractive around at least 17-20%.

Hope your mom finds what she is looking for. The more educated she is the better stone she will pick.

Mara -- Thank you very much for this very helpful post. It's great to hear from someone who has actually purchased from this seller. If the stone is actually a K/L, then I agree that 9k would still be a great deal. I think my mom is thinking about making an offer, but will likely wait until I'm in town in a couple of weeks so that I can see the stone with her. Hopefully it will still be around as I sure would love to see it in person!!

Ariel -- Thank you for the links.

Hey kennedy, you might have already moved on from the etsy ring, but I re-read the policy and it sounds like they just won't resize more than 2.5 sizes for free. I don't see why the ring can't be sized by your own jeweler or theirs. It may just cost extra. Anyway, good luck!! :wavey:

What do you guys think about this stone?

It's advertised as a 1.59 ct H, VS2 (it actually looks fairly white in the pics) with a small chip on the "outer edge." Its measures 7.5 mm and the asking price is $11,999 with a Best Offer option. Wondering what would be a good deal for this stone -- 12k seems like retail to me, especially for an uncerted stone.

I saw that stone last nite and it's amazing looking.

That seller seems to me to be almost close to retail most times, which is not why I would be on eBay, I'm not looking to spend retail.

If I were to offer for it, I would offer something like $7k. An H VS may be driving the higher value as well, assuming that's what it checks out as...but it's still overpriced for eBay IMO. OR maybe I'm a cheapo.

Also I would keep in mind that three 2c OEC's sold on DB in the last 3-4mo that were all around $9k, color was a little lower at L/M but still, a lot more spread.

That seller has great stuff for WAY too much money. I would want to security of JBEG or OWD if I am paying that much. And a lab report.

Thanks, Mara. Yes, these are my thoughts exactly. My mom missed out on all three of those stones on DB because I didn't act fast enough. This stone is gorgeous, but the price is just too high and I doubt they would accept anything even close to 7k. I'm sure the color is driving the price up, but who knows how accurate their grading is. Also, I know many old stones have chips, but that should be somewhat factored into the price as well. Oh well, I guess we'll keep on looking.

By the way, I've seen you mention that you recently bought an OEC....are you going to post pics any time soon?

ETA Just saw your post, Dreamer. Yes, I agree. Sigh. Such a pretty stone!

Oh it is a stuning facet pattern! But there are too many unknowns to pay such a high price.
