i learned a lot about RB and bought my diamond through pricescope. Now I am looking for a pear shape diamond for a pendant. what should i look for? should i insist on getting "excellent" polish and symmetry ( i think they are hard to find)? what would be the lowest color grade and inclusion grade acceptable?

Hi again Wawa!

No, you don't have to insist on excellent polish and symmetry, unless you really prefer to do so, as you could lose out on some beautiful diamonds that way. Good and above are said to look the same to the naked untrained eye. Concentrate on looking at as many as you can, to see which shape and type appeal to you. I have a large pear, an H is still very white, and SI1 or SI2 if eyeclean can be a good choice.

Here is a useful shape selector you can use - http://www.gemappraisers.com/shapePickerNew.asp

You can use this chart, but please use the numbers given as a guide only, they are not set in stone, but remember nothing trumps your own eyes.

thanks, but which vendors can i trust to tell me if the SI1 is eye clean or not? if i were to purchase on line?

Wawa, many of the PS vendors who have in house diamonds can tell you if a diamond is eyeclean to your standards or not. Popular vendors here are -

www.whiteflash.com

www.goodoldgold.com

www.winkjones.com

www.jamesallen.com

www.pearlmansjewelers.com

www.engagementringsdirect.com

See which vendors you like, then contact one, tell them what you are looking for if you can''t see a diamond you like on site, then they can help you further and maybe source a diamond for you.

For fancy shape diamonds especially pear shapes the best way to judge is to see the diamond in person (or a photo where this is not possible) as the tools cannot really tell you how attractive the pear looks in shape nor the extent of the bow-tie. For that reason, I prefer to sell pear/oval/marquise/cushion/radiant/heart shapes only when clients can come and select them in person. Attached are 3 x 3.01-3.03 carat DEF VS-SI1 pear diamonds to which illustrate what I mean re. how the shape varies.
