Hi All,

Got a very strange question.

I was working with Canadian Diamond Wholesale. I found their prices to be very fair.

At the moment I am torn though. They have sent me the specs on two diamonds. Both princess cuts. The first one he sent me, was 1.09 D VS1 for ~8200.

I liked this and just thought I would look at Blue Nile for comparison. Interestingly enough I found a diamond there with the EXACT same specs. I emailed him the link and asked for the GIA cert number. The response was that the diamond was sold ...

They sent me another option, once again I went to BN to have a look. Funny enough I found another diamond with the exact same specs. This time they sent me the GIA report #. The report''s are the same. My guess is that these report #''s are unique. The dates were the same. Is it the same stone?

So the Canadian Diamond price is $6539. The BN price is $5855. Not a huge difference.

Carat weight: 1.03
Cut: Very Good
Colour: E
Clarity: VS1

Depth %: 70.4%
Table %: 70%
Symmetry: Excellent
Polish: Excellent
Girdle: Medium to thick
Culet: None
Fluorescence: None
Measurements: 5.78 x 5.58 x 3.93 mm
Length/width ratio: 1.04

No real dilemma here I guess, I am willing to pay the extra $600 or so because I can actually visit Canadian Diamond Wholesale. I live close enough, that I can see the stone, and just general peace of mind.

I just thought this was interesting enough to share.

something doesn't sound right. If it's the same stone. Why not look at it in person, then order it from BN and save yourself $700? Or ask them to price match?

ETA: If this is an economic inefficiency in the way diamonds are sold, then you should use it to your advantage.

Thanks for sharing. That is interesting. I think it may be because Blue Nile sells diamonds that are not "in house" meaning they are not actually at their location.

I don''t know but maybe there is like a generalized listing out there and when you buy for example through Blue Nile, they then purchase from this lisiting. (Or that could be something I just made up)

Yeah, I think this is just their mark up ...

I guess it wouldn''t hurt to ask him to price match ... whats the worst that could happen.

This diamond is not in house either ... they would have to bring it in ...

Okay that makes more sense. I thought the diamond was in-house and was confused as how someone else could sell an in-house stone for a lower price.

Well, BN uploads diamond lists from various vendors, and the local vendor has acsess to that list, so he cna be quoting you on the exact diamond. You should be able to get it for 5700.
