Welcome.

It scores a 1 on the Holloway Cut Advisor which is excellent. This diamond looks like it is a nice make of cut rather than a Superideal we see mainly here, but it depends what you want. EGL USA are said to be the strongest of the EGL labs so that is good. There is a bit of girdle variation from thin to thick, polish and symmetry could be better by the looks of it, but overall it might be a very attractive diamond, although you could probably find one with a more finely crafted cut. I am not too sure if a little face up weight may be lost due to the thick variance of the girdle and depth, but it wouldn't be much as far as I can tell, using the carat to MM conversion chart and allowances recommended.

I would ask the vendor for an Idealscope image if he has it, to check this rock for potential light leakage, also a Sarin Report if he can, to get the angles for the crown and pavillion percents, as percentages are not thought to be as accurate using the HCA. EGL graded diamonds generally have a lower pricetag than GIA and AGS, so if you want a larger rock for the money ( as I did) then choosing one may be a way to do this. Be aware though that sometimes EGL graded diamonds are harder to resell or trade in than GIA and AGS graded diamonds, so this may be a consideration.

In short if you want a nice make diamond which you plan to keep and not trade up, then this might be a great contender. If you want a tighter cut Superideal top light performer, then you should look some more, it depends on what you want!

Thanks for all the info Lorelei, I forgot to mention that the price is $6,750. It sounds pretty good to me but what do I know. Any thoughts?

It looks ok as far as I can tell. I used the search tool above - Pricescope your Diamond, entered round diamonds of 1.45 to 1.50 carat, G colour and VS2 clarity with EGL reports - the size you are considering can be hard to find as cutters will try to hit the 'magic weight' 1.50 and get the resulting price jump if possible. Therefore the first diamond I found was a 1.50 for around $8400.

One other thing, this diamond may not be in house, so you may need to ask your vendor to call it in for you, sometimes there is a charge for this. You might be lucky and it is an in house diamond ( owned by a vendor) as a pose to being on the cutting house database, but I doubt it. It is easier with in house diamonds, as the vendor can easily eyeball it for you, but they have to call in what are called virtual stones. Also if you do choose this diamond, some experts recommend you get an independant appraisal to make sure the colour and clarity check out - and make the sale final on this, although EGL USA again is said to be the strongest lab. Also we might get some expert input shortly from what I can tell to help you, hang tight!

I already went to the shop and saw it, now I just need to decide whether to buy it or not.

Ok, well that is a huge bonus if you have seen it and love it! Your own eyes trump everything! I would say to make sure, see if the seller has any other diamonds such as AGS0 graded for light performance of similar size and colour - that way you can get a feel for a tighter cut diamond's personality and see what you prefer.

Also see if he will let you take the diamond out into natural daylight - to see whether it still speaks to you. Diamonds don't sparkle all the time, they do go into a rest mode depending on the available light, but they should still look attractive even if not exploding with sparkles at that time. If you had more time, this handy little tool would help you with this diamond, but I imagine you may have time constraints.

Thanks for all the help. I spent half the day today looking at diamonds and for some reason I liked this one. Do you think that the price is fair?

You are most welcome! All I can really tell you with the price is that by using the Search tool Pricescope your Diamond above, entering the specs and size, that as the nearest one which is an EGL graded 1.50 ct G VS2 round diamond is priced at $8400 approx with the Pricescope discount, that the price seems fair as far as my knowledge allows. Also this is an online price and B&M establishments generally have higher overheads, so their prices are usually higher than online. What matters is if the price is fair to you and that you feel your money is well spent. Sorry I can't be of more help pricewise, but what is a fair price is so subjective - to one person it may be and to another not! Making the sale final on having an independant appraisal may be a good peace of mind provider.

The fact that you said you liked this particular diamond and have looked at some others, means it is worth considering at least.

I think you got a nice stone there for the price. Not an AGS 0 in terms of proportions, but not far off.

Agree with everything Lorelei says, bit weighty around the middle making the diameter suffer slightly, but acceptable nonetheless.

You''ve seen it and liked it, the price is good--makes it a no-brainer to me.

Thanks for all the great info guys. I think I''m thinking about this way too much, that was the one I liked and I should leave it at that.
