I have a VERY old, and nice size single cut diamond (approximately 1.25 carats). It was in a simple four prong setting (this was a family heirloom). I''d like to re-set it, but I''m not sure what type of setting will go with this type of cut. Especially since everything I read says that you won''t ever find any single cut diamonds that are of a significant size because they''re used as sidestones because on their own they don''t really capture the light, they can seem dull, etc. Any thoughts?

Hi Steph. Are you sure it''s a "single cut"? A single cut would have seventeen facets versus the usual fifty eight. The reason I ask is because a single cut in a 1.25 carat size would indeed be very unusual.

If it did indeed happen to be a single cut, I''d be inclined to upgrade the cut to "full cut" status, increasing the fire, brilliance and value in the process.

Would love to see a photograph of that!
