What to do with a 6.5mm OEC? Temp settings?

Well I got a new pet rock (or maybe pebble would be a better term  ), that I need to decide what to do with. All thoughts, ideas, etc are welcome.

Sorry for the bad photo, it's the only one I have for the moment (need to borrow my moms camera since ours took a little hit).

Stats per the appraisal are:
-Center stone- OEC I SI1 (eye clean) 6.58 x 6.46 x 4.37mm no flouro ;(
-Side stones are all OEC including too tiny 3 pointers :lickout: and then the other two were 3.4mm.
-Setting is huge! That why Pet Pebble looks tiny. The setting weighs over 10 grams and is a size 10 1/4 with monster prongs in silver while the shank is 14kt gold.

Back story:
I was not looking for anything in this size, but having lost out on two stones this year that I really really wanted I was feeling a bit blue. When I saw this one I just had to buy it, it was a good price but I could have walked away were it not for the cut on this thing. Honestly this well cut OEC are so hard to find.

Problem:
I don't know what to do with it! I am still a student so it's not like I can just go around collecting these things :nono: .

I can't wear it right now since I am a 5 1/4 on one hand and a 6 on the other. The size difference is too big to re-size it and due to the monster prongs (and that the work is not so great) I don't think it is worth it to completely redo the shank.

Part of me says sell it and then use the money in the big OMC/ 3 stone fund (what I really want). Another part of me says reset it into a cheap temp setting, wear it for a while and then maybe sell itif you get tired of it. I have convinced myself that it will be easier to sell in a solitaire than in the current setting (over here it is easier to sell already set stones).

I have been looking at the fishtail setting from poppyseed http://diamondbistro.com/category/196/Rings/listings/24564/Beautiful-Vintage-Style-Fishtail-Setting.html either in white gold or white gold head and rose gold shank.

Does anyone know of other cheap temporary settings or any ideas for a permanent setting?

So what should I do? Any ideas?

It might need a bit of repair. I like to get the nicest setting I can for temps though so that if I end up wearing it for a lot longer than I thought, I am happy with the setting. If you get it for under 250 even if you have to repair it for another 100, I think it's worth it since it's platinum and so pretty (you can resell it later for that 350 once you get your permanent setting).

If it were me, I'd bid 180-200 and if you win it, great. If you don't well, move on.

Hmm I asked regarding the size of stone that would work with the setting and the responded with 1,25ct-1,50ct. So I don't think it will fit ;(

Ask them for mm measurements. NOT carat weight. A lot of people think 6.0 is 1 carat and 6.5 is 1.2. Ask them if a 6.5 mm or a 7mm stone would be better?

Good thinking. I really like the setting, integrated head, cathedral and baguettes and rounds in the shank.

What is your opinion regarding the old setting?

I am thinking about just selling the gold and silver and maybe selling the small OECs or keeping them for some other project. I don't think it would be that easy to sell this type of setting.

Urk it was for a 7mm+ :(sad .

Back to the drawing board.

Any other good ideas for temp settings?

I think scrapping the setting will buy you another setting! :) The internet tells me 10 grams of of 18k scrap gold goes for $381.

Well it's 14kt and the white bit is silver so it won't be that much, but I am hoping it will help offset the cost :naughty: .

Thing is I have to factor in shipping and VAT (28,5% :errrr: ) plus jewelers fees are ridiculous over here. I am hoping that mine will be more reasonable but last time I asked around, just setting the stone was $290.

I seriously am in love with your ring  . I did not realize that Bev k would customize so I went the full custom route.

What do you think of the Fishtail setting? All WG or WG/RG?

Found a couple of other possible settings.

From American Set (ebay) $150 tiffenyesk setting, 3mm knife edge shank (wish it were thinner) 14kt white gold http://www.ebay.com/itm/14k-WHITE-GOLD-DIAMOND-RING-ENGAGEMENT-SOLITAIRE-SETTING-/251106258637?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a77196ecd#ht_2232wt_1185

From Abazias $250 etched shank but peg head 14kt white gold http://www.abazias.com/database/engagement-rings/FourProng-Etched-Solitaire-Engagement-Ring_ENG-S-12-5634.asp

From Poopyseed (diamondbistro) $155 Fishtail setting either 14kt white gold or WG head and rose gold shank http://diamondbistro.com/category/196/Rings/listings/24564/Beautiful-Vintage-Style-Fishtail-Setting.html

From Poppyseed (diamondbistro) think it was $ 188 lightweight tiffant crown head

What do you think?

Any other ideas?

I seriously loved the one Gypsy posted but it is too big ;(

Do people think white gold would be better/more sell-able than rose gold shank?

Let me look for you tonight and see if I can find something on ebay.

Love that last one, Gyspy!

<blushing> Thank you! I love my ring, too - I owe it all to Pricescope, I didn't know either that all Bev K are made to order!

Well my spelling is bad at the best of times and now I just got back from a nice dinner... and the waiter kept giving me free drinks  . Seriously how on earth are you supposed to react when the waiter stops you before you leave to talk about how beautiful you are :errrr: weird. Although my mom got a laugh out of it and the recipe of their delicious sauce, so I guess all is well that ends well? My loupe arrived so we all had a bit of fun with that at the dinner table too.

I guess I can be happy that the gorgeousness setting Gypsy found went up a bit more than I wanted too spend. Thank you so much for the links Gypsy :appl: . Are there specific terms you search for? I tried searching for ring settings, pre owned etc and did not really find that much. Going too take a better look at them tomorrow.

GMUAlum08 your future fiance is going too be so happy with that ring! I love that it doesn't have the side bar in the middle. May I ask roughly how much the setting was? Thank you!

Time to go sleepy now, 2am over here. Thank you all!

i believe it was a touch under $500 (around $475 I believe) from GoG. Only $125-150 more than a the generic settings I was looking at. Worth every penny!

Yay I borrowed my mom's camera so finally have some photos. I am really bad at it though, I basically just point and shoot (don't even look at the screen) .

Hopefully this will give a bit of a better idea of what we are working with :naughty: .

As you can see I don't think it is worth it to save the setting. The idea of it is good but execution is pretty horrible. Have you seen the size of those prongs :errrr: ?

What should I do with the side stones? (2x 3.4mm and 2x 3pointers, all matched). Sell them? What would they even be worth?

I really appreciate your help, thank you!

1. I think finding a peg head over here might be a bit difficult. I am going to ask my jeweler what is possible. I have actually never seen a Swedish ring with a peg head, solitaire style rings always have an integrated head (often crown style and lacy) and a cathedral shank.

2. I like yellow gold so that's not an issue. Although the the price is a bit high (buy it now 399) since I have to factor in shipping and 28% VAT :nono: . Maybe they would accept a lower offer.

3 & 4 & 5. Won't ship to Sweden ;(

Meh sometimes I hate living so for away from all the pretty bling.

Just for a laugh, this is what engagement rings look like in Sweden.

And these are the nice brand ones  . I think we are one of the few places in the world where not only does the man also get an engagement ring, his is the most expensive one.

You definitively made the right choice!

Since this would be a temp setting, that is a bit more than I want to spend.

Question: The stone has a small chip that can be covered by a prong, would this be problematic with a used setting where the notches are already cut?

Maybe it would be safer to just get a new setting? :(sad

I think it's worth asking if they will consider a lower price 350 or even 320 for the ring. I would ask for 300. And see what they say. You can always come up, but going down doesn't happen.

Update:

I finally went with the Fishtail setting but with rose gold shank and white gold head. A simple WG might be easier to sell but I just love some color and I keep getting white diamonds :nono: . I just can't seem to find some pretty low colored old cuts with good cuts and good prices.

Considering my history I finally felt that the peace of mind of just having a new setting that does not require any work was worth it. Although Gypsy's skills at finding preowned settings is amazing, my ebay skills are pretty lacking  .

Now to play the waiting game ;( . Ugh I hate waiting. I just left in my e-ring to have the bezel removed and prongs put in and it will take 3 weeks (the benches are on vacation), gah I want it now.
