I inherited my aunt's wedding set, set with my grandmother's emerald cut diamond. I didn't want to use it as a wedding set, so I was instructed by family to sell the wedding band and engagement ring mounting but to keep the diamond to re-set. The diamond is a 5.25 x 4 mm emerald cut, so the only thing I could really think of doing with it was setting it east-west for a right hand ring, but that still probably wouldn't be a piece I'd wear daily. Now my mom and aunts have decided that instead I should sell the entire set together and buy something I'd wear daily to better commemorate my grandmother/aunt.

But I'm not sure the best way to go about it. The setting and wedding band are currently listed on loupe troop and I know their specs from the receipts when my aunt purchased them.

But for some reason, she never got an appraisal on the whole set to include details about the center diamond. It is eye clean (even at as close a distance I can focus with my 25 year old eyes) and faces up very white. I know the melee in the e-ring is F/G and looks to be that or higher. The L/W ratio isn't considered ideal for either a rectangle or square step cut, but the ring does sparkle very nicely and although you can see the steps you don't get any extinction when you move the diamond around. But beyond that, who knows. (All I have is my cell phone camera, so no better pics of the center stone)

With the size/value of a diamond that size, it doesn't seem worth it get the center stone GIA certified. Even factoring in the value of the setting and wedding band, the set doesn't seem worth enough to consign either. So what's the best course of action here? Should I just get it appraised by someone on the PS recommended list?

in my area, an appraisal is expensive (NY) so it might be worth it to send it to GIA instead since you are selling.
