I saw a pretty Emerald cut stone in a store in Denver (Hyde Park). 1.5 ct. G, VS1, very good polish, good symmetry.
Told my BF about it. He got the jeweler to do a mock up of a three stone with step cut side trapezoids. Very Pretty. Took my breath away actually, A. that he had such good taste and B. that he would shell out for this smancy ring.

Now we are trying to sell an existing ring (1 ct round) to pay for the new ring. I''ve looked at a few ECs and honestly can''t find one I like. We leave for Denver on Thursday.

I looked on Pricescope and this EC is probably in the 2b range. Should I wait and look some more or go for it? Part of me thinks I might be happier with the standard round brilliant and the actual ring at the proposal, rather than a subpar EC and I just can''t remember if this was a passing fancy or if it really really really grabbed me. (I think he will ask on our ski trip this weekend, ring or no ring.) I could just tell him to have the ring made up and wing it without seeing the stone again but I don''t remember it, other than it called to me from the jewelry case where it sat all alone in its rectangularness surrounded by RBs.

Ideally cut rounds are a dime a dozen here (not really but unlike nice ECs they are at least available), and I know he could turn the round stone for another at one of two places here in time to have something to take on our trip. Has anyone ever gotten a RB and NOT been happy?

I just don''t want to tell him to get it and then a week, year, 10 years later think I would have been happier with something whiter or with excellent polish.

Gads, the things that are preoccupying to me.

if it was me I''d keep looking- let your jewelers know what you''re looking for, ask your fellow Pricescoper''s to keep an eye out- now that you have a design in mind that you BOTH like, work to make it happen with stones that live up to your expectations! It will be worth the hunt.....

First of all, I just wanted to say: I''m from Denver and I LOVE Hyde Park Jewelers. (I haven''t compared their prices to something like Whiteflash, though.) They''re huge -- I''ll bet if you asked them to come up with a different diamond, they could? They aren''t just a retail mall store -- I think they started as a smaller jeweler and anyway are always rated Top Jeweler in Denver. I wouldn''t let yourself feel pressured by time into buying something that you don''t love? Give them a call and see what they can do for you! :) They''ve always been really helpful for me.

I had the same exact situation.

I went for the unique EC and I am re-setting my RB.

EC is a classic and is much different from the "normal" RB.

It''s a great stone, go for it!

Well I just thought that I would add that your eyes will probably never be able to see a difference between very good and excellent polish. So that shouldn''t be a worry for you.

And the color, well most people would not say that they wished that their G color diamond was whiter (but there are some color sensitive people who would lol). So I think you need to look at different colors in EC and fancy shapes and see if it bothers you.

Also, the only other thing you might want to decide on is if the Good symmetry bothers you. In an EC, I would think that it might be easier to see variances in symmetry because it is a step cut. So you would need to see if this particular stone has any such issues and if it would bother you.

So, all in all, it sounds like you really don''t know if this is the stone you want. I would go back (if possible) and take another look at it and other EC stones, even if you have to go to different jewelers to see some. Look at all different color, symmetry, and clarity combinations. (But the VS1 clarity on this particular stone is great.) If in the end, this stone still speaks to you, then I don''t see any reason not to get it!! But if you have any hesitations, I would keep looking, and if this stone is meant to be, then maybe eventually you will come back to it. I would just hate for you to take a leap of faith and find, like you said, that in a week, month, or year that something about this stone is just not right...

Well good luck, and when you do get a ring, WE WANT PICTURES!!!

I completely agree! I think it would be worth the wait so that you can have longer to decide what you truly want. Also, if you go back to the store, see if they will take the diamonds near a window or outside so that you can see how they perform away from the jewelry store lighting.

And one question for you: Does the emerald cut still call to you when it is away from RB''s, or were you drawn to it because it was the unual stone in the middle of a lot of RB''s?
