I'm still on the hunt for a diamond engagement ring. I think a reasonable budget for us is $2000 (give or take a little) I want to make sure I'm getting the best value. I went to the Brian Gavin website and I have my heart set on this setting, but it $625. I just adore bezels.

You all are the experts, what stone would you go with in the $1300 range? I have long, skinny fingers (sz 5). I don't want anything too big. I know I want something in the .5-.8 carat range. Would you go bigger, but less quality? Or smaller, with better quality?

I also checked Brillant Earth, but they seem really $$$$$.

Thanks!

I would look for the biggest J Si2 I could find. In the size range you will get for your budget that color and clarity would be a-ok with me.

This would be my choice too.

I think Gypsy's suggestion is the best option given what's available. I wouldn't bother getting the stone from other vendors if you are absolutely set on the BGD setting. BGD charges a fee to set outside stones and I don't think it'll make it worthwhile to ship a stone from another vendor, given the budget.

Thanks Everyone!

So, here is my indecisiveness kicking in. Three stone versus solitaire? Last night I saw the petite trellis on Blue Nile. Now, I'm wondering if I really love the bezel that much. I noticed on BG, that all bezels are non-refundable and are final sale items.

Thank you. I just want to make sure I'm getting the most for the money and getting something I'll be happy with for a long time.

I think it is a gorgeous combo myself. You can always pair it with a diamond band if your looking for more bling.

On page 59 of show me the bling under 1 ct diamonds on the very top there is that exact ring posted with a 0.43 diamond on a size 5.5 ring, I think it looks super classy.

Here's the ring farmer gal found -

It's a beautiful look, and apparently - per Gypsy's caution - they do scale the ring to fit the stone. (But do double-check!)

personally, I would go with one of these little sparklers. Antique cuts look great in bezels or any setting for that matter. I'm personally not a fan of bezels as I think other settings show off a great diamond to it's best advantage. The light performance of these are proven and loved by PSr's and you cannot go wrong with one of these lovelies. These antique faceted diamonds will make your ring different from any others out there and are really amazing stones...very special IMO. Good luck.

$262 over budget is a small price to pay for a higher color a clarity.

I'm sure GOG can match that setting from BGD.

Oh sorry thought your budget for the stone was $2,000.

I like the AmericanSet setting - really showcases the diamond. Do you have to ship your diamond to them - as it is a bezel and would be custom to your stone?

Like the setting, don't know a thing about the company tho. Price looks very good!

It looks like I can let them know the size of the stone and they will make the setting. Then I guess I'll take the stone and the setting to a jeweler to set. I need to figure all of that out first. It's really do like that setting. Yesterday I was looking at I.D. Jewelery's Ebay store and they have some pretty nice stones. Someone had recommended them to me on Pricescope when I was looking for earrings.

With over 4400 purchases and 100% positive reviews I'm sure you would be happy with that setting. It looks very nice. IDJ also has a good reputation but don't know if they provide ASETS on their stones.

Performance is everything and you surely want a stone that is a great performer. that is why I would recommend the AVR's for your price point. GOG does not have any superior/premium MRB's in your price range that are around .5 c. Have you watched their videos on AVR's? Many who go into the store wanting a H &A MRB see the performance of the AVR's and buy one of those instead when they see them in person compared to the H&A's. The first two and last two AVRs I posted above are $1500- $1800 which with a $200 setting would be within your budget and if possible I would consider busting the budget by $500 for that .6c I VS2 AVR. An I/J color will face up white. Color does NOT make a stone more beautiful...CUT IS KING! and we cannot stress that enough to newbies who can't get past wanting a higher color/clarity because they think that makes a "better" diamond. You would get a magnificent stone on a small budget that you will be proud to wear that will out sparkle a lesser cut MRB or even a H&A MRB. GOG might even set it in that setting for you, but I don't know their policy on that. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Ariel - Thank you so much. I was completely ignorant about diamonds until I found this site. I always that that clarity and color were the deal breakers, not cut. This makes a huge difference for me now when shopping for a stone. Sorry if I sound completely clueless here, but I have no idea what any of those acronyms mean. I really am a newbie at this.

Ok, sorry, I was the same on all the acronyms in here too. H & A means Hearts and Arrows and MRB means Modern Round Brilliant. the H &A's are the finest cut in a MRB stone...the best performers.

AVR is an August Vintage Round which you can only get from Good Old Gold (GOG). They were custom cut stones to look like the antique stones that have a very lovely facet pattern of the old cuts which are now the craze on PriceScope (PS). GOG also have August Vintage Cushions as well. Both the AV round and cushions are chunkier faceted which many people prefer to the common more splintery faceting of a MRB. GOG has the best education for newbies when it comes to purchasing a diamond no matter what cut you might prefer. I would suggest that you watch their educational videos before you buy a diamond.

In my opinion (IMO) at your price point the AVR would be the way to go....it will out sparkle and out perform most other stones out there and as another PSr stated a J eye clean SI2 will give you the largest stone for the cheapest price and still face up nice and white if well cut. If you prefer the splintery faceting of a MRB, then the stone that Gypsy recommended on Brian Gavin might be what you would like. BGD have great performing stones and provide an ASET image which shows the light return of the stone. But GOG also posts the ASET PLUS the Megasope results of their AVRs which is another measurement which proves great light performance of a stone.

You are certainly welcome...getting an education on diamonds before purchasing is very difficult and confusing. I learned so much from the GOG website...I went from wanting a cushion cut diamond to loving their AVR's. I never cared for round stones before...as the splintery faceting was just not appealing to me and boring and common. I loved the more square cuts but those August Vintage Rounds are just lovely and unusual.

Hope this helps in your search.

Here is a recent video on two AVR's a J and an I color. But note that even though the difference in size is only .2 mm's the 1.25 is a notable difference in size, which is why if you can stretch your budget to get that .6 c I VS2 AVR I would do it as it will be a noticebly larger stone than the .5 carat stones. But GOG will do a video for you too comparing several of these stones that I posted above.
