Hey everybody,

I want to get my wife a big, beautiful aquamarine for our anniversary. That's her birthstone.

I really like the aquamarine stones at this site: http://redcarat.com/#/blue , click "beryl"

I'm deciding between 16200692 and 15132811.

Any opinions on which one I should go with?

Thanks all,

-G

The link isn''t working?

I like the step cut look, but I''m no gem expert,,, I just love the look... what do you think she would like ovals or sqaurish-rectangular?

Well, she has a lot of oval/round-ish jewelry.

I really like the squarish-rectangular look, but I''m not sure she will.

I guess the question becomes: should I go with something I know she''ll like or take a risk on something new??

They are both very large (30 x 20 mm and 21 x 16 mm) so I take it it is for a pendant? The blue is rather light for an aqua, the preferred shade is a bit darker but these don''t show any gray which is a very good thing. Please ask for additional pictures of the aqua; for something that expensive I would get more pictures. Do you know what the return policy is?

I prefer step cuts for an aqua cause:

a) it enhances aqua''s luster (the way light shines when it hits the stone) which is a bit different than that of most transparent stones
b) it makes a better use of a material with low index of refraction (the degree to which it can slow down light and make the stone sparkle) while minimizing areas that lack brilliance.

P. S. Don''t want to sound rude, but hope you have noticed that one of them is almost 9 times more expensive than the other.

I believe that it does, but it's just my personal opinion. Aquamarine is generally known for a much better clarity and transparency than about 99% of stones, which gives it's brilliance a special character. That's why people sometimes mistake them for stones of higher R. I., cause they seem to sparkle more than what you'd expect. And having simple, clean lines and larger facets accentuates that IMO.

P. S. Step cuts can also help deepen the color, which is something that rarely hurts an aqua.

That''s what I was thinking...weird ones to choose between.
