hi ladies,
i've learned so much about diamonds in this forum but realized i know nothing about melees/side diamonds!! :o
so hopefully someone can provide some insight to my questions below!

i'm looking at a pear shaped diamond that's around 13.5mmx8.5mm in size.
I would like to set it in a thin halo, but i'm not sure what size melee to pick.
the ring would look something like this, but of course the ratio of the diamond to the diamonds on the halo will be different.

i went on diamdb.com and tried to visualize how the diamond would look on my finger to begin with.
it seems fairly big so i wouldn't want a very big halo.

i'm also wondering if the diamonds on the halo need to be the same size as the diamonds on the band.
i would prefer to have a small band that's not too thick. my finger size is around 4.5-4.75 so i wouldn't want to have something too bulky.
what is a good band width for me finger size?

thanks!!!

That's a pretty huge pear! I personally would NOT halo a pear that large, I would go for baguettes. However, if a halo is what you're craving I would suggest you decide what designer you want to work with, perhaps someone who is known for excellent CAD work like ERD and have them create some designs so you can get a better idea of the difference. I think many on here prefer a delicate halo often with .005 stones which makes a delicate outline of sparkle. I have seen many of these halos in person and I personally prefer a little larger at .01. This is why I suggest a CAD designer, they can give you an idea of both and you can choose.

Good luck!

Oh no don't halo that stone for that finger! It'll hang off her knuckles. That won't be comfortable!

will they do a better job on the setting than jewels by grace?

how else would you set this diamond? it's a rose cut diamond and i dont like bezel but i want the edge of the diamond to be nicely "protected" so i figured halo would be nice. i would prefer to set this in 4 prongs and no V-shapped prong for the tip, so without the halo the pointy end won't be protected

Hmm you're right. If its a rose cut, it might need a halo. Is this ring for you? Are you discussing it with the gal who's getting the ring?

If so, put the stone on her hand and see if you have a fair amount of room.

Ok there's a big difference between a brilliant cut pear and a rose cut pear!!!

If the diamond is from Jewels by Grace I would have no problem having her do the setting since she can provide CAD as well. I have had a rose cut diamond band from her previous company and I loved it. One thing I can say about the rose cut is that it does lack the normal sparkle of a diamond and the reason I eventually sold my band was just that.

I would absolutely halo this to give it that sparkle and contrast between the soft flashes of light from a rose cut and the small glitter from modern cut diamonds. As for pave style and size, ask Grace what she recommends. She works with vintage stones primarily and seems to have a good eye. My rose cuts were bezeled and I loved them. The bezel has a nice vintage feel for me, more so often than prong set rings.

she picked the diamond as one of the options. since we dont live anywhere near jbg there's no way for us to try it on. this will most likely be a leap of faith internet purchase :(

thanks for your advice! the diamond is a rose cut, but in the pictures and videos it has a real nice sparkle to it which is why i like it. it doesnt look like the typical murky looking rose cut

That is a glorious rose cut! My diamonds were of the same quality, not foggy at all. They still do not sparkle like a modern cut diamond though, more like a Swarovski crystal. Bold flashes of light and color but not much actual small light "sparkle". I would absolutely do a halo for that reason. You will get the best of both worlds. I do plan on having a rose cut band re-made for me one day similar to the Tiffany cobblestone ring, http://www.tiffany.com/Shopping/Ite...+1-x+-pu+-f+false+1-lr+-hr+-ri+-mi+-pp+1240+3

Start talking to Grace!
