first off, let me tell you that PS has been a huge help in understanding the diamond market. I''m very close to asking my beautiful girlfriend Katie to marry me and have been scanning through posts on here for days now....

She''s got her heart set on a 1+ ct Tiffany''s Lucida and b/c I don''t have the cash to buy it direct I''ve searched the secondary market and have come across this....

What should I expect to pay for this ring and...are there any bits of information that I should be aware of or concerned with?

Total Depth Precentage 67.9%

congrats on deciding to take the plunge! I don''t really know much about secondary markets in regards to diamond purchasing, but from what I''ve gather on Signedpieces.com the lucidas they offer are roughly 58-62% of original retail. One thing I would be concerned about is where you are purchasing it. Is it a reputable reseller? Is the ring really what they claim it is? I don''t know how you''d go about having it valued by a Tiffany''s rep.... hopefully someone here can help with that. I do know however that Signedpieces is very reputable and they are fully committed to providing excellent service and quality products. I''d check their website daily if I were you because they are always listing new things. I know they also sell on ebay, so you might want to keep an eye there too.

Best wishes!

Hi Joe,

Please be very careful buying on the secondary market. I recommend having it sent to an independent appraiser, who can confirm that it is what it is supposed to be and act as an intermediary. Many will offer an "escrow" service so that both you and the seller can be assured of receiving your item/money.

Also, the HCA tool can only be used on round stones, so unfortunately throw all that knowledge out the window for Lucidas...

A lot of Tiffany jewelry on ebay is fake. Pretty much the only internet re-seller of Tiffany I''d touch is SignedPieces.com. I''ve heard lots of stories of people buying from them and taking the piece into Tiffany and having it be confirmed as real.

Right now they have a .6 carat Lucinda. I know it''s smaller than what you''re looking for but at E VVS2, you can always use the line my father used "I wanted to give you a diamond as perfect as our love!".

It is rather deeply cut so that might rule it out.
They''ve also got a 1.5 carat Lucinda, but that might be above your price range. I''d suggest emailing or calling them and telling them what you''re looking for. They should be able to help.

Also, is it the name or the style she loves? If it''s the name, then nothing will do but Tiffany. If it''s the style and Tiffany is just what she knows, then you might try Whiteflash.com''s trellis style ring set with an X-Factor diamond. That should look very nice for a whole lot less money than a Tiffany.

Good luck!

Is she set on the style of the ring, or the Tiffany name? If the former, what about copying the style? As IndieJones mentioned, Whiteflash has a similar cut called the X-Factor, and you can put it into an x-prong to achieve the same effect for quite a bit less than a Tiffany Lucida.

1.036 ct H, SI1 X-Factor $4035

X-Prong Trellis $925 in 18K WG

well we have looked at some other options, such as a luce''re diamond in a Vatche X setting and while she likes them i think she''s got her heart set on the Lucida. This may be another case of "Tiffany''s Syndrome" but hey, i''m only gonna do this once so I might as well go all out.

The seller for this diamond is asking 6K and the are not selling it on ebay. I have seen the tiffany''s paperwork...the only downside is that it''s sized at 4.5, Katie would need a 7... will that jump in size affect the ring/diamond or setting at all?

hmm, so what do you think, for 6k is this worth it? (providing everything else is legit of course)

Joe

You probably CANNOT resize a 4.5 to a 7! So do not buy that ring unless you call Tiffany and ask IF it could be resized or how much it would cost to change to a size 7 setting!

Oh, and the cut tool is for round diamonds...won''t work with a Lucida!

Does T&Co charge for re-sizing? I had mine done larger (4.5 to 5.75) and it was complimentary.

Mine was done complimentary also from a 6 to an 8. Best of luck buying your lucida. We bought ours back in July and it is just amazing-so sparkly! I would be careful where you buy it though-just make sure that you aren''t getting a fake. Signed pieces seem to have some great ones on there.

Well I called them and they stated sizing up 4.5 to a 7 should not be a problem, they were very rude though when i mentioned i was buying it on the secondary market and they said I would not have any rights being that I''m not the original buyer.

does this sound correct? or did i catch a person over there on a bad day?

also, resizing was quoted at 170 dollars for the platinum setting...

Not sure about rights, but the $170 does not sound bad for resizing a plat. ring at Tiffany. Glad it can be done...some rings cannot be sized when there is that much difference.

Tiffany charged me $50 for resizing from size 4.5 go 4.25. I am in Japan though.
