I just purchased an engagement ring for my gf, but apparently I didn't read up enough before I bought it. I got a very lovely Scott Kay 19k yellow gold three stone ring with an 0.81ct center stone. However, the jeweler gave me the setting they had in stock and mounted the stone themselves. Should I take the ring back and have them send it out to Scott Kay and get a brand new setting? I really like the one they gave me, I'm just worried about the quality of the craftsmanship. They are a very reputable jeweler in the area and I feel bad questioning them. The setting looks great to me, but I'm not an expert. Any suggestions? Thanks everyone! Sorry for the grainy picture. I'll try to get a better one soon.

Hi. I''m not an expert by any means, but I think you should trust your judgment. Does it look good to you? Also, you should find out the Scott Kay warranty info... Some designers, like Tacori, will void any warranty that they give you if any other jewelers do work on your ring, even if it''s a jeweler at a store that sells Tacori rings. If Scott Kay is the same, you''ll need to have your jeweler take the stones out and send it to Scott Kay. If not, see if it looks nice and be happy with it! I think it''s beautiful, myself

You need to take it to an appraiser if you have doubts about the setting job.

Setting a diamond is an everyday job, and a good setter shouldn''t have any problems.

If you get a new setting, I assume it would be at your cost.

When I bought my Tacori, the shop sent it back to Tacori to be resized, but set the center diamond themselves. They said that if they had sized it, it would have voided the warranty, but the warranty wasn''t affected by them setting the diamond. Like JulieN said, setting a stone is pretty basic. Your ring looks great to me. Unless you can find something seriously wrong with it, I would think that it would OK that the shop set it.

Hey everyone. Thanks so much for the feedback so far. I do really love the ring, so I think I'm just going to go with it, but I'm still interested to hear what others have to say. Here's a better picture for you to look at. Thanks again!

It looks fine to me, very pretty setting!

Scott Kay really does make gorgeous things. I think she will love it!

It looks really nice to me! They set the diamond at the perfect height, IMO. My jeweler set my stone in my Scott Kay, and I could not be any happier. Are you going to get the matching wedding band?

The setting looks fine to me! I would take the ring to an appraiser and get it insured anyways though and I recommend this to everyone.

Yeah, I''m planning on getting the matching band, but we''ll have to see what she wants!

Thanks for the advice. The jeweler who sold it to me appraised it and I''ve already gotten it insured with Jewelers Mutual, so I should be fine, even if something does happen to it. I''m just trying to make sure nothing happens!

The next time you get something appraised, please take it to an independent appraiser, not the same person who sold the piece to you.

Ditto, "independent" is the key word here...someone who doesn''t have a biased opinion because they want your business. You are probably fine, but an independent appraiser can give you some peace of mind.
