After months and months of endless searching and wonderful help from everyone here, I purchased my diamond. For some odd reason, even though I haven''t seen it, I"m good-I know it''s beautiful. Then I did the same, even more intensive search (exhausting!) for a setting and, well, didn''t find one. So, I am having the same vendor where I purchased the diamond make a custom setting and I"m holding my breath that this will turn out to my liking?? So nervous!!! But, should I have the loose diamond sent to an appraiser while awaiting the setting? OR should I just wait until it''s all finished and set and then have it appraised? And should they send it to me first and then I can just drive to the local independent appraiser? Like other posts, I too don''t know about numerous shipping costs, here there and everywhere...which is partly why I just went ahead and had the same diamond vendor make the setting. OK...thanks for your help.

Dear Vabaz,

It is a lot wiser to have the stone appraised beore setting the stone. Did you buy the stone with or with out a certificate? if you bought the stone with out a certificate please have it certified first as after setting a diamond in a ring it is not always perfectly visible, because o the prongs of the setting, to see all inclusions.

Shipping cost.........

You have bought a diamond. probably you have paid a substantial amount fr this stone. what would the shippnig cost be compared to your purchase?
if the purchase of the stone was at a lower price then 2 or three shipping cost. you should rehtink about it. however normally this would not be the point. Normally the rice you have paid for the ston would be a lot more then some shipping cost.

hope you find this info usefull any other questions, le me know.

What exactly is your question?

I see that you bought a WF ACA princess, and you say you went with the same vendor for your setting - does that mean you went with a WF custom?

How the custom work turns out depends more on your vision (specifically, the exactness of your vision and the detail to which you communicated this to your rep.) than holding your breath and hoping for lucky, though we all do a good amount of that too. I had WF do a custom and I couldn't love it more, but I was very clear on the elements that were important to me, and I was happy to let the designers take care of the "how"; this is obviously more difficult if you have a very very detailed image in mind. The good thing about WF is that they won't quit until you're happy.

Should you have had the stone appraised before setting? Yes, if a precise and accurate appraisal of THE STONE is important to you (it may or may not be). They can only see as much of the diamond as is visibile through the setting, so details - colour, clarity, etc. can be skewed. If you send your entire ring to an appraiser upon completion, the details on the diamond may not be as accurate, but he/she can tell you about the structure/integrity of the setting, too.

Either way, given the multiple thousands you're spending on this project, if an independent appraisal is important to you it seems foolish to quibble over shipping costs. And yes, I do think an independent appraisal is important, even for WF ACA stones.
