What price would be reasonable for a 1.2 carat?

Hello everyone,

I''m thinking of purchasing a diamond from a local jeweller but I don''t really know a whole lot about diamonds;
so I was hoping to hear from advice from the experts! (please & thank-you!) Cheers!

Here are the specs

Shape and Style: Round Brilliant
Measurements: 6.76 - 6.81 x 4.20 mm
Cut Grade: AGS Ideal 0
Color Grade: AGS 1.0 (F)
Clarity Grade: AGS 4 (VS2)
Carat Weight 1.207
Fluorescence: Negligible
Table: 56.6%
Crown Angle: 34.6
Crown Height: 14.9%
Girdle: Faceted, 2.1% to 4.7%
Pavilion Angle: 40.7
Pavilion Depth: 42.7%
Star Length: 53%
Lower Girdle Length: 75%
Total Depth: 61.9%
Culet: Pointed

Jeweller asking price $16500 CAD

Sounds alot too expensive??

here are some examples from GOG, who aren't even the cheapest online. and these will be awesome performers, no doubt.

1.23 G VS2 ~$9900 http://goodoldgold.com/diamond/2688/
1.2 G VS2 ~$9100 http://goodoldgold.com/diamond/3585/
1.24 F VS2 ~$10500 http://goodoldgold.com/diamond/4327/
1.11 F VS2 ~ ~$9100 http://goodoldgold.com/diamond/4281/

so...I would look elsewhere..

ETA: based on the numbers, it does sound like a nice stone. Would need an IS to confirm. However the price is just way out there..

I would say that is a fairly high price here is one same specs just a little bigger and a lot cheaper 1.24ct FVS2 PS price: $10,497.39

Thank-you for the links & verifying the stone does seem good.
Btw may I ask what is an "IS" you are referring to? I can try to find that info also..

What price could I possibly work out with my dealer that would be "reasonable?" (as I would like to buy local than through the internet; as I''m from Canada & taxes may get complicated) but if its going to cost me 60% more local; then I should definitely resort to Online Vendors. Thanks again!

Deelight: yes...that is one dreamy rock!

Now comes my second biggest concern:
GIA or AGS (ex/ideal/hearts&arrows wise)? Is is all subjective?

Most people on here like stones that fall within both the AGS0 category . AGS0 is a tighter category then the GIA EX but the stone above falls within the category of what AGS would grade as 0 or ideal.

As for hearts and arrows it really depends on personal preference I personally love the idea of a stone with perfect optical symmetry that displays true hearts and arrows but for some it is not an issue.

And an IS is a idealscope image, it shows leakage in stones and helps to pick a good performer :).

As for working out a price with your dealer you can always ask for a price match and see if they are willing to accommodate. As for taxes I can''t comment sorry but someone else might know :).

Deelight-Thank-you for your explanation; I think I agree AGS0 seems the best also!
Is there a program on ps for me to use to create a IS image?

I have just been offered another stone;

Shape and Style: Round Brilliant
Measurements: 7.12 - 7.15 x 4.40 mm
Cut Grade: AGS Ideal 0
Color Grade: AGS 1.0 (F)
Clarity Grade: AGS 4 (VS2)
Carat Weight 1.365
Fluorescence: Negligible
Table: 55.2%
Crown Angle: 34.1
Crown Height: 15.2%
Girdle: Faceted, 1.1% to 3.6%
Pavilion Angle: 40.9
Pavilion Depth: 43.2%
Star Length: 49%
Lower Girdle Length: 75%
Total Depth: 61.7%
Culet: Pointed

Asking price for the 1.36 is $18250 CAD... this VS2 seems to be a better vs2 than the 1.20 so thats always a bonus right?

And also I talked to the jeweller; best price he is able to do it at is: $14500 CAD (so I little better than the original asking...but not comparable to online savings)

I think the Canada to USD is almost one to one,
so that price still seems way too much imho - is there a particular reason why you wouldn''t want to purchase online? If you want a canadian diamond some vendors do sell them, And many people, such as myself, purchase online and pay the import taxes. Not really complicated.

That sounds like a price almost from Tiffany''s....i.e. OVERPRICED!

I am from Canada and bought my stone from the US last month. There are NO DUTIES for importing jewelry from the US, all you pay is provincial (8% in ontario) and federal (5%) taxes, which you would (should) pay with your local vendor anyways. So it is very simple. They FedEx it to you, FedEx contacts you to sign a form allowing them to import it, you give them a credit card number to charge the taxes, and then they deliver it.

Buy online from the US, those prices are totally astronomical. What price *should* you pay? Well, people posted some comparable stones in the F VS2 ideal range for around $10 000 US, with the exchange that is still much much cheaper.

Double check: "importing jewellery" from the States is different than "importing loose stone" from the States. From what I have researched, the item is duty free only if it is not set; i.e. a loose stone. At least that was the case when we purchased.
Hope that helps.

I agree with others’ comments that the prices you’ve been quoted are way too high. My fiancé and I are from Toronto and after searching locally, we decided to go the online route because we could get a much better diamond for a lot less money. We ended up working with Barry at Excel Diamonds in NYC because my fiancé insisted on being able to meet the vendor face to face. There are other online vendors that have stores you can visit - I’m not sure if that’s a concern of yours or not – it wasn’t for me, but it was for the fiancé. Anyways, Barry shipped the ring to Cheektowaga for free and then we made a day trip out of picking it up from FedEx. Where in Canada do you live? If making a trip like that isn’t your thing or you’re not able to then as DD and Spirit noted the import fees are really reasonable.

There is no duty on jewelry containing precious stones (including diamonds), period, as of 2006. I looked into it, and was not charged any for my ring, which was imported. You can find the information about this law change in FedEx's website.

ETA: the law changed in 2006, but the duty was not 100% eliminated until March of this year, it was phased out over the last 2 years.
