What pieces do you consider essential jewelery items?

What jewelery pieces are staples that you think everyone should own?*

*putting aside financial considerations of course ;))

Honey, you know that none of them are essential right? ;))

Now, that's out of the way, my own personal basic list is actually rather larger than it has any right to be, but here's what I'd put on it:

My wedding ring and engagement ring
a rhr / blingy band
studs (in 'big' and 'dainty' sizes, which will be defined by personal taste I guess)
drops / dangle earrings
a small pendant
a great big pendant to match the dangly earrings
a bangle or tennis bracelet

ie basically one of each possible jewellery item  . I also very much like having dainty little studs and pendant, plain band / thin eternity rhr for dress down, and a bigger pair of studs or dangly earrings and a bigger or blingier pendant for dress up.

That's quite a lot. Just as well I don't have anything else pierced...

eta, what do I think everyone should own? No views on that. This is just my personal 'essential' wardrobe. One of each, in two sizes. I like a choice of RHRs, too...

1. A big ole diamond ring. Someday I'll get one (big and old that is). Like a great OEC, or maybe a tranny...yeah baby.

2. A nice pair of OEC studs (someday I'll get a pair). Not too big, maybe 1 ct tdw?

3. A nice strand of pearls (got that!). 8.5-9mm freshadamas and tahitian keshis.

4. Some funky, nonexpensive, interesting stuff - usually in silver (got a whole ton of that!).

5. A great watch (got that, but it's broken).

(see, what I really want to say is "one of each, in every cut, and some in different colours...")

Dreamer, now you've got ME dreaming. ;))

a stand-alone wedding band
a practical wedding band - for camping, cycling, overseas travel
diamond stud earrings
dangle earrings - either gold and diamond, or semi-precious stones and silver
everyday watch - again for days that I ride my bike, etc.
dress watch

I do wear some bracelets and necklaces, but my heart lies with earrings. Any bracelets and necklaces are silver at most, and usually only worn at dress up occasions if I'm wearing stud earrings. I guess I should add pendant or bracelet to the list since this is what everyone should own. But honestly, as much as I love jewelery, I will never notice your pendant or bracelet unless they are pointed out to me. I can spot studs as 20 paces and love that little light near people's faces!

"Essential" is so subjective! This is what I (28 years old, newly married and living in a small South African town) consider essential:

1. A plain band
2. A diamond band
3. Diamond studs
4. Diamond pendant
5. Dressier pendant
6. Dangly drops (ideally SLG47's pearl drops!)
7. A diamond bracelet
8. Plain(ish) watch
9. Dressier watch

So far I only have 2 and 4. My jeweller is currently making 3 and 5 and I hope to have 1, 6, 7, 8 and 9 by the end of the year!

OK people, lets stick to the intent of the question and not get bogged down in semantics, ok? ;)) 8)

Somehow you all seem to have figured out what I meant!

Wedding ring/set
Earrings, especially if a woman has pierced ears
Necklace or pendant
Watch

That's about it for essentials.

Plain wedding band.

If money is no object:
1. Plain wedding band
2. Eternity band
3. Ering that goes with 1 and/or 2
4. Pearl necklace and earrings
5. Hoops (YG/WG/ or diamond depending on preference).
6. Dangly earrings for special occasions.
7. Casual watch

For someone who goes out on special occasions and has to look a certain (wealthy) way:
8. 16" diamond necklace
9. Diamond tennis bracelet
10. Diamond studs (at least 1 ct each)
11. Dressy watch
12. RHRs (three stone colored stone rings in different colors)

I agree about those being the essentials.

a watch
a gold necklace
a big diamond ring

Did we figure out what you meant? I was just answering honestly. If you read something into it, well, that's on you ;)

Ooo, fun!

The great equalizers:

- a tiara. Everybody needs a tiara for those days when they need a little reassurance that they rule.

- A really short choker necklace to set off the length of your neck: I like line necklaces myself, but I'm open-minded, you can have links or a riviera if you prefer.

- a really long necklace that can double as a belt. I love the ones I've been seeing recently of diamond briolettes pierced on both ends and strung on platinum wire. (BTW, is there a special name for this? Hunting them down is like looking for hen's teeth.)

- enormous pearl earrings. Big. Really big. Just because they're beautiful.

- great big chunky gold cuff bracelets, a matched pair. Like Wonder Woman.

- a diamond thumb ring.

- a jeweled lorgnette.

... just me?

...and there it is again. Another post from Circe. Another post I cannot disagree with a single, solitary syllable of. Another post I wish I wrote myself.

A lorgnette, obviously.

Circe, you forgot a scepter. And a few large brooches. Plus a couple parures....

LOL! I was commenting on the people who said nothing is essential and its all subjective actually, suggesting the question cannot be answered ::) But it seems everyone is answering just fine, in their own subjective and nonessential ways.

If I am ever in the position to kit myself out in the basics in one trip, I want Circe to supervise. Along with Frekechild, I think my children would accept my authority much better if I had a sceptre.

I can't believe no one has divided this way:

WHILE SINGLE
* nice, versatile watch
* signature piece (i.e -- cuff bracelet --OR-- pendant necklace --OR-- family heirloom RHR etc.)
* gold or platinum earrings (if ears are pierced) ---OR--- pearl clip ons (if no piercings)

ENGAGED
(all of the above PLUS)
* engagement ring (solitaire --or-- eternity band)

MARRIED

(all of the above PLUS)
* wedding band
* diamond studs

DIVORCED

(all of the above PLUS)
* all the bling you can buy with any settlement $$

:naughty:

Why can't PS have a LIKE button?

Ering
Wedding band
Rhr or two
Diamond earrings
Pendant
Watch

I will never own a watch or bracelet because I don't like having anything on my wrist, but my "list" is almost complete!

Thank yew, thank yew verramush, ladies. I am ALWAYS available for guided tours and personal shopping assistance when perusing auction houses, vaults, Scrooge McDuck's Money Tower, and the hoards of dragons.

ETA: A scepter! Duh, it was right in front of me! I am properly gobsmacked. [smacks self in forehead with scepter substitute - in this case, fairy wand] [also, notes need for smacking-self-in-forehead-with-scepter-smiley]

Tiara ;) I like that one.

the divorced category sounds naughty...

In a good way :)

Well, my only real essentials are my wedding set and diamond studs. They're the equivalent of my undies, shirt, pants, and shoes in my regular wardrobe...can't really go anywhere without them. BUT I think the LBD, skinny dark jeans, knee-high black boots, wear-with-anything cardi, etc of the jewelry world are a great RHR, strand of chunky pearls, engraved band, diamond and/or gem stacking band(s), and colored stone drops for the studs. Once I have all that, my jewelry wardrobe will be solid (though never complete :naughty: ).

A nice diamond ring
Diamond studs
A nice pendant
A gemstone ring
A plain gold band

I don't have ANYTHING off the lists. I am the poor relation :blackeye:

A nice versatile band, pendant, and watch.
I tend to prefer pieces that can be dressed up for down, like classic solitaires styles, but that's just me. I wear my wedding set and diamond pendant with hoodies and jeans, and evening wear, lol. My watch too.
