I need to schedule my make-up appointments pronto! I currently have an appt. with a place that uses Laura Mercier, which they claim holds up so well, but I think it may be too far away.
I''m certain some make-up brands hold up better than others. As I wrote in another post, I''m a huge crier. We''re talking splotchy red swelled-up face so I need some seriously good staying power than can hold up through all of that. Suggestions?
MAC? Merle Norman? Aveda?
Make-up counters at the mall too dangerous?
I can''t afford to hire a make-up artist to come to me

Hmmmm, I''m not an expert on makeup brands, but I know I''ve heard from some ladies on here that this stuff called Model in a Bottle is awesome. You spray it on over your makeup (or something like that) and it keeps everything from wearing off. Not sure if it makes things cry-proof, though. I''m interested to see what others recommend!

Hi Winston!

I use Estee Lauder's Double Wear make-up - I've tried all different brands and this make-up BY FAR lasts the longest! It claims to last 16 hours (?) - but really - it does last all day!

check out this website - it has reviews of makeup including for long-wearing options. Good reviews, and that way you can get objective reviews on what''s the best.

I usually start there when looking for new makeup, and then check out makeup alley for user reviews.

That cosmeticscop.com site is pretty cool, thanks!

I should add if any of you are from the Milwaukee area, do you recommend any specific place? I''ll be in the Whitefish Bay area.

I used Bare Escentuals and I was SHOCKED by how well it lasted. Definitely better than any cream-based make-up I''ve ever used. I freshened up with a little bit of mineral veil before the reception and was good as new (outdoor wedding, 90 degrees, and I''m a crier/sweat-er - if my makeup was going to run off my face, that would have been prime conditions). If I remember correctly though, I did use a little bit of clinique concealer for the blemish that sprouted up the day of, but other than that, it was BE all the way.

Actually Bare Minerals holds up best for me- I suggest using a primer. For eye shadow, if you want any eyeshadow to stay put in any circumstance except a cottonball soaked in eye makeup remover, use Urban Decay''s Primer Potion. Seriously, the shadow will NOT budge! This stuff is the best.

Double Wear is the best - it''s great coverage and lasts FOREVER.... think it would last a week if you didn''t take it off! haha...ewww... don''t do that

I was going to reiterate proper treatment and priming before makeup.

There are a lot of primers. Some have dimethicone, which is a silcone type base. They provide slip too. There are those that are more lotion like.

Make sure your skin is clean and put on your cream. Then apply primer, allow it to absorb. Use a foundation brush to apply liquid make up if that is what you chose. Then lightly dust powder over it, but not too much or it can look cakey.

The entire Lauder double wear line, concealer, powder and foundation (I use the double wear light in the tube) really work well and stay on.

Clinique had one called workout makeup, that was supposed to survive heavy perspiration. I would say get samples of as much as you can and then just test them out somehow!

Wait...Sera, are BE and BM the same thing or are they different? I can never remember - I only use the mineral veil and a lipgloss for my daily makeup, so I think I get the two confused often. The stuff I used was the "swirl, tap, buff" stuff with the kabuki brushes...(?) That''s the Bare Escentuals line, right?

El, I think Bare Minerals is part of the Bare Escentuals company? I think that is right...

I think BE is the company name and BM is the powder foundation.... so yeah, that''s the stuff.

Lip-wise, allow me to recommend Lipfinity: I''ve had everybody from friends to hard-as-nails fellow professionals at conferences to dental hygienists (the last one, admittedly, was a little freaky) display shock and awe at the fact that my lipstick will not budge, no. Matter. What. It is kind of awesome, but be sure to have an oil-based remover on-hand! The first time I went to a conference and forgot to pack my remover, it was an awkward night or two of trying to get it off with conditioner before I realized that (duh), Vaseline would do ....

Absolutely! I''ve tried EVERYTHING - Bare Escentuals, Mac, Clinique, literally everything Sephora offers, and nada comes close to Double Wear. I have fairly oily skin, and with the amount of coverage you get from Double Wear, it''s amazing that my skin isn''t oily by the end of the day - it''s sheer perfection - seriously!

I wear a Lancome SPF 30 moisturizer, Smashbox Primer, and then Double Wear - everyday for over a year now...BEST make-up I''ve ever used.

Go to a counter and have them apply it for you and walk around the rest of the day - you''ll be back the following day to buy this stuff!

Another vote for everything double-wear here!
I have to say, the staying power is just excellent. Best out of everything I''ve tried and I''m a total product junkie!
I use the smashbox primer also. Think I will try the Laura Mercier primer next as it is meant to be good.

Hey Hazel!

I''ve tried the Laura Mercier foundation primer and I have to say, although it is more affordable than Smashbox, it doesn''t compare.

The one primer that I find is an excellent choice for the price is Philosophy''s The Present. It''s an excellent primer in the sub $25 range. Laura Mercier''s primer is ok - just there''s better in that price range IMO.

This post has been very helpful for me.. So LipFinity is the best lasting lipstick?

I wore Estee''s Double Wear foundation for a long time. The foundation looked great in person, but for some unknown reason, my face would show up as white as a ghost in flash photography at night?! I don''t think this happens to everyone, but just giving you a heads up. I had to switch to Laura Mercier''s foundation because I looked so weird in pics! :S

I learned on Makeup Alley that a LOT of brides ended up with the "white-face phenomenon" because of the SPF in their foundation!! So I specifically searched for one withOUT sunscreen when I was looking for wedding makeup. I ended up using Estee Lauder Individualist, which I love, but it''s very natural and not really full-coverage. Just something to think about though!

I have had great results with BE ... I usually use the primer by Smashbox.

I have even put a light base of liquid foundation ( Chanel or Estee Lauder) I use the Matte cream by EL.. and then the
BE on top ... Just make sure you use very light layers... I still get that smooth glow with a bit of shimmer.

I also use GLEE for some pop of color, in addition to a blush..

Nars lipstick holds well on me, and there is a new eyeshadow base everyone is raving about, it comes in a little purple bottle at Sephora by Urban Decay.

This post has been very helpful for me.. So LipFinity is the best lasting lipstick?

Both MaxFactor and CoverGirl have versions of it: I don''t see any particular difference between the brands, except for slightly different ranges of color. Some of my makeup aficionado friends have been very surprised that something that''s sold in a drugstore can be this good! And, I''ve tried others ... but since Shiseido eliminated their long-last lipsticks (nostalgic sigh), this is the best stuff I''ve found ....

for those of you that use BE. I have been using it. I LOVE the coverage, but if the stuff gets anywhre near my eyes, it makes me look wrinkly. I have the Smashbox Primer, but never used it with BE. I wonder.......

Thanks to you guys. This is a great thread. I too love lipfinity and covergirl long wearing lipshades.

I''ve used the Smashbox Primer with BE. I like the primer. I''ve also used Cosmedicine, Dr. Brandt Pores No More, the BE primer with good results with the BE. Others I''ve tried and not been crazy about.

I don''t have the problem with the eyes looking wrinkly... make sure you use a moisturizer for your eyes. They also have a BE concealer that is still a powder but it''s not super dry if that makes sense. It has good coverage. What I''m using right now is Erase Paste by Benefit... you might want to stop by the Benefit counter and try it. It is a thick cream that just blends right in. It''s this weird looking color like Barbie skin color lol, but it totally becomes natural looking as it blends into my skin- very creamy and moisturizing and brightening.

That''s good to know! Though, I think regardless I''m going to look my typical very white self. I have Cosemedicine tinted primer with spf- this last week two people commented on how white I looked- I thought maybe it was that, but when I put it on half my face, I really don''t see a difference. The BE has spf, so maybe I should go without the spf primer.
