I love the look of 8 detailed prongs on a big ole diamond (nothing too small that would be overcome by the metal)..gorgeous. It was a hard choice for me, because I also really love 6 prongs for a nice rb. Not the biggest fan of bezels.

Missed this poll first time around, so it was fun to find it now!

I used to think I liked split prong (four sets of twin prongs = 8) because that was what my original setting had. But my new setting has 4 prongs (I have a 1.53 RB) and I ADORE IT! I never thought I would, but oh, I do! The platinum head is so much more "delicate", and lets sooo much more of the diamond show (both from the top, of course, but also from the sides.) I love seeing more of the pavilion, and I THINK the stone (which is already GORGEOUS!) is even BRIGHTER in the new setting.

My sister has 6 prongs on a 1.75 oval... and for me, personally, I just don't care for that look.

Re: my 4-prongs, I do worry a little bit about the safety factor... I think if I'd break or bend even one prong, I would probably lose the stone.

So I try to be very careful, keep a close eye on it, and keep it INSURED!!!!

When the sides of a diamond are exposed like this in 4 and 6 prong settings there is a much higher chance of damage.

Simply turning the setting so there is a prong on the shoulder side protects the stone.

I went with split prongs, because like Mara I am also thinking of the Leon Mege double claws.

I very much adore my MichaelE split prongs. But then again, I may be biased

This isn't to say though that the Leon Mege ones don't hurt either.

Bezel, of course.

Actually, my love is the girdle setting (does this have any better name?) and then gipsy settings come next. I would have liked to see ''claw setting'' on the list given the stryking example shown above

Wow, those tiny eight things look DANGEROUS to boot!
valeria101, to you have a side view picture of a girdle setting that you could post?
