What is your OEC sweet spot?

Hi all!

First, let me preface this by saying that I know you need to see old cuts in person in order to properly evaluate performance and beauty. AND, I know there are some that won't even look at numbers when it comes to old cuts because there are so many different combinations of proportions that "work"!

However, that being said, I would LOVE to know what your sweet spot is? What makes you think you'd like to SEE that diamond! Pretend you had 10 certs with no pictures and you could only see one in person. Hold color/clarity/size constant...just talking about cut. What would the numbers or range be?

Depth%
Pavillion
Anything else?

Thanks diamondseeker! So, you like the AVR's with the larger table? I think that is their older style? Can you tell me why? Trying to learn over here.

I don't like that AVR. The table is a bit larger than I like and the facet pattern looks like little circles - very unnatural.

I like tables below 50% and I like this AVR better ..

I like a teensy table, high crown.

I also don't really like the AVR. I love my OEC and the faceting.

I don't know all of the technicalities, but in looking at a lot of different stones, it seems tables in the 40s and depths in the 60s are what appeal to me.

This is very interesting. I will follow this thread and see if there are some magic numbers I know you shouldn't just look at the numbers but I guess it could be used as some kind of guidance.

Thanks for all the great responses! It seems like everything I have been finding through all the usual vendors plus my local jeweler/antique store have the tables in the 50-55% range which gives a different look. I have told them that I want small table/high crown and they all seem to think 52% IS a small table...one even mentioned that the under 50% tables get too small. Glad to see I am NOT crazy. I am sticking to my guns!

I don't have a numbers sweet spot. I judge with my eyes and use the numbers as a secondary piece of information. I don't have a number sweet spot because the "best numbers" change so much depending on the type of cut and the style of the cut -- there are too many factors.

Sometimes OEC's that I've liked on the net, I've been surprised to find that I don't love in person. I really think OECs need to be seen for selection.

Funny...this is an old thread from when I was starting my search! The diamond I ended up falling in love with has a 46% table and 65.5% depth. I don't have any other info...wish I had a sarin on it. Oh well! But, I agree with Gypsy, you absolutely have to see old cuts in person. I was equally enamored with a tranny that had a 52% table and was much less deep...60% I believe. So, yep, numbers don't tell you a whole lot.
