To be honest, I have not seen anything in our local retail stores that come close to the the market price chart shown here on pricescope. I went to Kohl's today to buy some shorts for my son, and looked at the jewelry counter out of curiosity.
I was HORRIFIED to see a rather ugly 1.0 ct I2 diamond in a plain solitaire setting with a price tag of $9000. Yes, you read that right, 9K. They also had a standard 3 stone 1ct ring, set with I2 stones for $5000..... blink, blink. Even if they went at 50% off, what the heck? For I2, I-J color stones?
I also saw a 1ct, vs2, color E at Costco, for $16,000. It sure didn't look like E color to me, and didn't seem to be cut well enough to warrant that kind of price tag. I could go on and on... Penny's, all the major jewelry chains... ugly stones, outrageous prices. Can someone tell me what is going on?
Two years ago I got my 1.0ct 3 stone ring with I-J, SI3 diamonds for $599. I got my large 1.0ct G I2 for $800. It is extremely well cut, and measures large. I just got the big diamond reset in a gorgeous bezel ring, that was $900 including sizing and resetting costs. Out of pocket I paid a grand total of $1700 for this ring that is my 10 year anniversary ring. The bezel conceals a vast majority of the feathers around the girdle of the diamond. It looks like a million bucks. I never knew an I2 could be that pretty. Thanks to everyone who at the time advised against fracture filling the diamond. It appears that simply a change of setting made a world of difference in how the diamond showed...
With the prices I'm seeing, I am concerned that I should get most of my diamonds appraised and take an additional insurance policy out to protect against theft. Anyone have any advice, comments they would like to share?
